Which one sounds better ? American Vintage II 1966 Jazz Bass vs American vintage 64”

I never held a Vintage '64. I do own the Vintage II '66 J-bass and I think its about perfect. If I had to go down to one, there's a good chance that would be it. But honestly its about the neck for me. Yeah ... true, it does sound great. But for my hands that neck just fits perfectly. I have (or had) an Ultra, Geddy, AO-50, Adam Clayton, Pro II.... my Vintage II puts them all in the "up for sale" category.

The one in best condition. Fretwear, condition of the pickups, possible defects, worn tuners. Everything you have to replace should be taken from it's value. So some serious inspection of both examples is in order. Those basses do not come cheap.

Each individual bass, regardless of series will sound and possibly feel different.

My buddy loves his Seafoam Green AVRI II - (and I wouldn't mind one!)
The AVRI '63 P is highly regarded here - I believe it's from the same series, ~2013 as the '64 J.

I'd look at the specs & options of each and see if there's one that appeals more to you in that regard.
I really don't think you could go wrong with either one.

Thank you

The 64 was the brightest crispiest sounding jazz Ive had. It sounded really good. I tried a 66 in store and thought it sounded a little more thick in the mids.

Definitely splitting hairs on sound. I would make the choice based on which one feels best. The necks are pretty different with the 66 being thicker and more rounded at the back.

I've had numerous Jazz basses of various series, country of manufacter at mid to high price points. I have to say the AV II '66 is my favorite Jazz bass ever and the first Jazz bass I haven't immediately wanted to rip the pickups out of. The pickups are full, warm and gritty. I haven't played the '64 and I'm sure it's a fine bass, if they share the same pickups I think you'll be pleased.

Have you ever played a flea roadworn? Wondering if the “66” is similar to that. I have that one and I like it very very much.

No I haven't.... I never thought about it before. But now that you've planted that (GAS) seed (I thank you very much), I'll be on the lookout for one. But I also put some value to that Vintage II binding. I like to peek down at the neck from time to time and in low-light situations a rosewood neck - especially if it has those clay dots is REALLY hard to see. That binding jumps right out at you so it only takes a glance to see where you're at.
