Which Past Song Reminds You Most of What We're Currently Experiencing?

No doubt we're all experiencing strange days. I doubt any of us would have guessed a few years ago that we'd be going through what we are currently living - the pandemic, not seeing friends and family, no gigs, tribalism and overall wackiness.

Please note - this is NO WAY intended to be political. There is so much great music from the past, it's interesting to explore how something that was written decades ago could be prophetic and easily apply to 2020. If you have something to contribute, please post the song lyrics as well as a recording or video of the song if you'd like.

For me, the song "Sandman" by America is one of those tunes.
To me, the lyrics apply to what's happening and the vibe in 2020 in many different ways:

    "Sandman"

    Ain't it foggy outside
All the planes have been grounded
    Ain't the fire inside?
Let's all go stand around it
    Funny, I've been there
    And you've been here
And we ain't had no time to drink that beer

'Cause I understand you've been running from the man
That goes by the name of the Sandman
He flies the sky like an eagle in the eye
    Of a hurricane that's abandoned

Ain't the years gone by fast
I suppose you have missed them
Oh, I almost forgot to ask
Did you hear of my enlistment?

    Funny, I've been there
    And you've been here
And we ain't had no time to drink that beer

'Cause I understand you've been running from the man
That goes by the name of the Sandman
He flies the sky like an eagle in the eye
    Of a hurricane that's abandoned

I understand you've been running from the man
That goes by the name of the Sandman
He flies the sky like an eagle in the eye
    Of a hurricane that's abandoned

I understand you've been running from the man
That goes by the name of the Sandman
He flies the sky like an eagle in the eye
    Of a hurricane that's abandoned

I understand you've been running from the man
That goes by the name of the Sandman
He flies the sky like an eagle in the eye
    Of a hurricane that's abandoned

I've seen America 3-4 times over the decades, the last time on New Years Eve 1999/2000 at the now defunct Universal Amphitheater with Christopher Cross and Poco as the opening acts. Sandman is a tune they always rocked up a bit, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

    Here's a performance from 2013:

Please keep it classy and respectful.

@nixdad, I'll admit all I knew of America was Horse With No Name, which I really don't like.
Sandman has been a revelation. Thank you.

When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be
For though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be, be
And when the night is cloudy there is still a light that shines on me
Shinin' until tomorrow, let it be
I wake up to the sound of music, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
And let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

We're definitely off to a good start...
Thanks for posting, @brianrost! Please post the lyrics as well when you have a sec.

    @Oddly -
Classic! Please post the lyrics when you have a minute.

You're welcome regarding the America info. They actually have quite a few good songs if you take the time to review - check out their Greatest Hits - History album for a quick crash-course if you like. I'm a sucker for good vocals which feature harmonies (The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Eagles, CSN, etc.,) so these guys fit right in.

BTW - a trivial question for you.
Do you know who did the artwork for this album?
    america-history-americas-greatest-hits-del-1975-delantera.jpg
Hint - he was a beloved comedy actor who is no longer with us.

    Oh, so GOOOOOOD, @JRA!

    this one is apt:

    There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware

I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound
    Everybody look what's going down

    There's battle lines being drawn
    Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
    Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind

I think it's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
    Everybody look what's going down
What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
    Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side

It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
    Everybody look what's going down

    Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away

We better stop, hey, what's that sound
    Everybody look what's going down
    Stop, hey, what's that sound
    Everybody look what's going down
    Stop, now, what's that sound
    Everybody look what's going down
    Stop, children, what's that sound
    Everybody look what's going down

The eastern world it is explodin'
    violence flarin', bullets loadin'
You're old enough to kill but not for votin'
You don't believe in war, what's that gun you're totin'
And even the Jordan river has bodies floatin'

But you tell me over and over and over again my friend
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

Don't you understand, what I'm trying to say?
Can't you feel the fear that I'm feeling today?
If the button is pushed, there's no running away
There'll be no one to save with the world in a grave
Take a look around you, boy, it's bound to scare you, boy

But you tell me over and over and over again my friend
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

Yeah, my blood's so mad, feels like coagulatin'
    I'm sittin' here just contemplatin'
I can't twist the truth, it knows no regulation
Handful of Senators don't pass legislation

And marches alone can't bring integration
    When human respect is disintegratin'
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin'

And you tell me over and over and over again my friend
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

Think of all the hate there is in Red China
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama
Ah, you may leave here for four days in space
But when you return it's the same old place
The poundin' of the drums, the pride and disgrace
You can bury your dead but don't leave a trace
Hate your next door neighbor but don't forget to say grace
And you tell me over and over and over and over again my friend
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction

    Lyric, as requested...

It's the End of the World
    R.E.M.
That's great, it starts with an earthquake
Birds and snakes, an aeroplane, Lenny Bruce is not afraid
Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn
World serves its own needs, don't misserve your own needs
Feed it up a knock, speed, grunt, no, strength, no
Ladder, structure clatter with fear of height, down height
Wire in a fire, represent the seven games
In a government for hire and a combat site
Left her, wasn't coming in a hurry with the furies
    Breathing down your neck
Team by team, reporters baffled, trump, tethered crop
Look at that low plane, fine then
Uh oh, overflow, population, common group
But it'll do, save yourself, serve yourself
World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed
Tell me with the rapture and the reverent in the right, right
You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light
    Feeling pretty psyched
It's the end of the world as we know it
It's the end of the world as we know it
It's the end of the world as we know it
    And I feel fine
Six o'clock, TV hour, don't get caught in foreign tower
Slash and burn, return, listen to yourself churn
Lock him in uniform and book burning, blood letting
    Every motive escalate, automotive incinerate
Light a candle, light a motive, step down, step down
Watch a heel crush, crush, uh oh, this means no fear
    Cavalier, renegade and steer clear
A tournament, a tournament, a tournament of lies
Offer me solutions, offer me alternatives and I decline
It's the end of the world as we know it
It's the end of the world as we know it
It's the end of the world as we know it
And I feel fine, I feel fine
It's the end of the world as we know it
It's the end of the world as we know it
It's the end of the world as we know it
    And I feel fine
The other night I tripped a nice continental drift divide
    Mount St. Edelite, Leonard Bernstein
Leonid Breshnev, Lenny Bruce and Lester Bangs
Birthday party, cheesecake, jelly bean, boom
You symbiotic, patriotic, slam but neck, right? Right
It's the end of the world as we know it
It's the end of the world as we know it
It's the end of the world as we know it
    And I feel fine...

  13. Well I'm about to get up sick From watchin my t.v.
Been checkin' out the news Until my eyeballs fail to see
I mean to say that every day Is just another rotten mess
And when it's gonna change, my friend Is anybody's guess
So I'm watching and I'm waiting Hopin' for the best
Even think I go to praying Every time I hear them sayin'
That there's no way to delay That trouble comin' everyday
No way to delay That trouble comin' every day
Wednesday I watched the riot I've seen the cops out on the street
Watch them throwing rocks and stuff and choking in the heat
Listen to reports About the whiskey passin' round
Seen the smoke and fire And the market burnin' down
Watched while everybody on his street would take a turn
They stomp and smash and bash and crash and slash and bust 'n burn
And I'm watching and I'm waitin hopin' for the best
Even think I go to prayin' Every time I hear em sayin'
That there's no way to delay That trouble comin' every day
No way to delay That trouble comin' everyday
You can cool it You can heat it Cause baby I don't need it
Take your t.v. tube and eat it
And all that phony stuff on sports
    And all those unconfirmed reports
You know I watch that rotten box Until my head begin to hurt
    From checkin' out the way
The newsmen say they get the dirt
Before the guys on channel so and so
    And further they assert
That any show they litter up
They bring you news if it comes up
They say that if the place blows up
They will be the first to tell
Cause the boys they got downtown Working hard and doin swell
And if anybody gets the news Before it hits the streets
They say that no one blams it faster Their coverage can't be beat
And if another woman driver Gets machine gunned from her seat
They'll send some joker with a brownie And you'll see it all complete
So I'm watching and I'm waiting Hopin' for the best
Even think I go to praying Every time I hear them saying
That there's no way to delay That trouble comin' everyday
No way to delay That trouble comin' every day
Well I've seen the fires burnin' And the local people turnin'
All the merchants and the shops Who use to sell their brooms and mops And every other household item
Watch the mob just turn and bite em
And they say it serve them right Because a few of them are white
And it's the same across the nation Black and white discrimination
Yell and you can understand me And all that other crap they hand me
In the papers and t.v. And all that mass stupidity
That seems to grow more everyday
These time of year some ******* say
He wants to go and do you in Cause the color of your skin
Just don't appeal to him No matter if it's black or white
Because he's out for blood tonight

    Have you been around?
Have you done your share of comin' down
On different things that people do?
    Have you been aware?
You got brothers and sisters who care
About what's gonna happen to you
    In a year from now

Maybe I'll be there to shake your hand (Shake your hand)
Maybe I'll be there to share the land (Share the land)
    That they'll be givin' away
When we all live together, we're talkin' 'bout together, now

Maybe I'll be there to shake your hand (Shake your hand)
Maybe I'll be there to share the land (Share the land)
    That they'll be givin' away
When we all live together, we're talkin' 'bout together, now

    Did you pay your dues?
    Did you read the news
This morning when the paper landed in your yard?
    Do you know their names?
    Can you play their games
    Without losin' track
And coming down a bit too hard?

Maybe I'll be there to shake your hand (Shake your hand)

Maybe I'll be there to share the land (Share the land)
    That they'll be givin' away
When we all live together, together together

(Shake your hand, share the land)
You know I'll be standing by to help you if you worry
(Shake your hand, share the land)
Now more sadness, no more sorrow, and no more bad times
(Shake your hand, share the land)
Everyday comin' sunshine, everyday everybody laughin'
(Shake your hand, share the land)
Walkin' together by the river, walkin' together and laughin'
(Shake your hand, share the land)
Everybody singin' together, everybody singin' and laughin'
(Shake your hand, share the land)
Good times, good times, everybody walkin' by the river now
