which spector model is this? it doesn't look like the newer NS-2J...but maybe i'm mistaken? the only old spectors i can find are ones with a P & J configuartion...maybe someone can enlighten me. that's flea right there and the video he is using this bass in is from 1987-88 (fight like a brave). the picture is small but maybe someone can make out the bass.
The current NS-2J bolt-on is really an updated version of the NS-2JA, which was produced from 1983-85, according to the Spector history at http://www.spectorbass.com/NewFiles/modelhistory.html . That looks pretty much like one of those. Todd Cooke has a decent photo of a red one, which makes it easier to make out the details, on this page: http://www.spectorworld.com/bspector.htm The regular NS-2 was also available in a J/J pickup configuration, but most of those that I've seen had gold hardware rather than chrome, and the large squashed-egg inlays. thanks for the info mike. would you or anyone happen to know if these basses are rare and what they go for used?
Here's another pic. That bass he's playing is an NS-2J and it looks like a neck through. There weren't very many of those made and if I'm not mistaken, most of the J's were bolt-ons. As far as the value I couldn't tell, honestly. I've never been able to find a used one myself.
Flea probably had his custom made now that i think about it, i know he had a bunch of Spectors earlier in his career. that black bass right there would definitely be my dream bass right now. if only i could find one used thanks for the quick answers guys
HI I had one a while back. They made very few of them. Mine was black. They had two j's, bolt on neck, jazz bass type taper neck, chrome hardware Rob
was it used? would you mind sharing with me how much you paid for it? im just curious as to what i should expect if i ever come across one.
HI Yea. Bought it used maybe 4 years ago. They were produced in the mid 80's. Cant remember what I paid. I think I traded a bass plus some cash. Sorry Rob
I bought an NS-2J just like the one Flea's playing in this pic, in Austin, in '98 for $500. I believe the original NS-2Js go for much more now. But I gotta say, it sounded pretty awful! It was intended as a live backup for my beloved NS-2A, and felt very similar, but sounded nothing like it - really thin and brittle.
