Just bought a Squire Mikey Way sig Mustang. 30" scale, passive humbucker in the p-bass position, great tone. The rounds on it sound good but not quite what I'm wanting tone wise. I want to play this mainly pick style and get a really thumping low mid tone but still bright enough to bring out the harmonics. I'm going for the Billy Idol-White Wedding bass tone or round about. It has a string through body. I'm thinking flats or tape wound strings, but I would like some advise. Which strings would you put on this bass to get the sound i'm looking for?
The response is overwhelming. Did I ask a dumb question? I could spend hours sifting through previous threads but I thought my question was specific enough to warrant a new thread. I'm not accustomed to playing short scale basses and know very little about flats and tape wound strings so I would be interested to get some opinions and information even if it is a link to a previous thread.
Well, I think that White Wedding was Doug Wimbish. Ask him what he used. (I could be really wrong.) Chances are you'll need a roundwound string for that sound. My daughter has that bass and roundwound stainless kill with it. I know that most string manufacturers make a short scale string. Flats are killer, too. you might consider half rounds or brite flats to get the best of both worlds. It's no different than getting strings for a Hofner. Best of luck.
BTW, on my 69 Les Paul short scale I have tape wounds and on my Hofner copy I have tape wound D & G with flat wound A & E.
If you go with D'Addario Chromes you may not want to go with the short scale set unless you feel like trimming some silk. I just used these on my Musicmaster bass and it too strings thru the body which made these strings come up a bit short. For a bass that strings thru the bridge these would be spot on but not so for thru body. Otherwise I think these are great sounding strings.
I'm using GHS Brite Flats on my Coronado II, and love them. The only other flats I'm currently using are Labella on my P; Love them too. Be careful not to use too light of guage on a SS, unless you can handle low tension. I tried TI's on my Coronado and hated them, at least on it, but maybe they will be better on a long scale. 057912
Neighbor kid who had one up the street in the mid 70's used daddario roundwounds, then rotosounds swing 66 shortscale on his.
You need med scale strings! I don't have a white wedding tone but I do love my chromes on my mustang. Very warm tone.
You can't use Labellas for string-through body. Unfortunate, as they're my favorites. I'd recommend Chromes, but you'll have to check total length. You will need at least medium scale strings. And your bass is not a Squire, it's a Squier.
Absolutely correct! I can only imagine how many people have been 'burned' buying a 'short-scale' set of strings for a Mustang. I know it happened to me!
