who do you think has the most instantly recognizable sound in music?

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous [BG]' started by peteroberts, Mar 10, 2005.

  1. Let's not include vocalists on this one.

There are some players, you hear one note, and you know it's them. Jeff Beck comes to mind. So does Scofield, and Pat Metheny. Mingus' sound is pretty recognizable.

I thought Wayne Shorter was, but I heard something on the radio the other day and I was *sure* it was Wayne; it turned out to be Hank Mobley!

Who do you think has the most recognizable sound? I'd probably say Scofield.

Fieldy definately. You can tell a Korn song coming on just by his sound.
  9. Like it or not, U2.

Just The Edge, rather than all of U2 I think. And Bill Frisell. For bassists, I'd offer Dave Holland, Steve Swallow, Red Mitchell... An awful lot of the "great greats" have this quality. I expect that's why they're the great greats.
  11. Wayne Shorter on soprano.
  12. Jimi Hendrix my friends..

    The Van Halen brothers.
  14. Eddie Van Halen.

I can't tell the difference between Satch or Vai.

But, aside from any similar licks he may play, Van Halen's got a sound and style that's instantly recognizable.
