There is a certain freedom to owning an instrument that you don't care about scratching. Some people take that freedom to the extreme and beat the crap out of their instruments. Let's see some really beat up basses that are still playable and, preferably, still played. - Dave
+1 My ATK305 has definitely seen better days, but it really doesn't look bad. Other than the ugly cut where someone cut the pickup surround off of the bridge, there's really only one mark on it: a big chip where I threw it at the drummer one night.
1964 P-bass that I bought in this condition in the early 80's (now owned by my brother). It's beat up but playability is excellent. The headstock is browned from age but in good shape... the finish is gone from the back of the neck and feels sexay! The rear of the bass looks horrible... very chewed up from a biker belt buckle (or something)
Love the electrical tape on the pick-up! I wonder, does anyone ever talk about "guitar body rash" on a belt buckcle? "Here's a great Harley belt buckle, just the usual wear and tear, a little bit of sunburst finish on it from a 64 Pbass" ?
that bass is too sexy for words...judging from the fretboard, it looks very playable...I bet it feels GREAT... as Kevin pointed out, the electrical tape across the pickup is a very nice touch. It's probably there to eliminate that nasty "pop" sound that happens when strings touch exposed pole pieces. But the haphazard way in which it was put on, just fits the bass perfectly... I LOVE IT...this bass just screams..."play me as hard as you can. I can take it."
