Jaco certainly had one of the qualities of some of today's top athletes. He had a substance abuse problem.

if you are going to poll people for best athlete, include all sports.
  14. Johan Cruijff,

But err... I think the most headstrong willing, committed, trained, etc. etc. etc. athlete would be lance

I'd say Sergei Bubka, though I'd bet that 99.99% of you don't know who he is.(He's the world record holder in polevaulting)

Seriously, watch the olympics from about 15 years ago, this guy was amazing. He cleared 20' 2" while holding about 16 feet up the pole. He also broke his own record about 18 times.
  16. Wayne Gretzky

And you could have added Pete Sampras to the list, as well as Franz Klammer. Tennis players and skiers get no respect eh?

Edit: How about Steven Hendry, the snooker player? Is snooker a sport? Is golf a sport? Tiger or Nicklaus?
  18. Alexei Nemov

    Michael Phelps
    Marion Jones
    David Beckham
  20. Michael Jordan.
