An acquaintance was showing me his new bass at a jam the other day. The pickup looked like any active MM you've ever seen. But the catch is, according to him, that one coil had the enormous round pole pieces a la' MM. And the other coil supposedly had a blade.

This thing had a great, meaty tone. No weak moments or dropouts when he started doing his trademark bending thing. I really liked the sound of this pickup.

Now the catch. It was a leftover that the luthier had taken out of another bass he had worked on. No visible name. Plain black. I don't know who makes these pickups, but I want one. I'm planning to build a fiver with the MM/J set up you see on the 55-94. I liked this pickup better than the Bart on a Lakland.

    Who makes this mutant?

-the MA4CD has either alnico rod polepieces or ceramic blades.

Kent Armstrong do covered MM p/ups (I put one in my Dearmond), but they usually have the brand name on them.
