I've got a large bigleaf maple I need to remove this summer (~24" diameter at chest height and fairly straight), and would love if some of it ended up in instruments. I'm going to cut and stack what I can to season and use for rough-hewn projects around the back 40, but if somebody wants to come pick up a log or two, hit me up. (x-posting to the BG side)
I sent the information to Seth and he replied: That is probably great wood but not big enough for me. I’m so darn spoiled by millings from 54” trees that 24” is just a pup... For sure thank you for thinking of me, though! I asked if someone building cellos or violins in the Northwest would be interested. He replied: Is the outside all lumpy wiggly like it might have Soren good flame? That’s when fiddle and guitar folks get interested It’s hard to tell from the outside. The picture below shows but if the the outside of the tree at the bottom, milled on top... if that makes sense
I guess your big leaf maple isn't big enough for basses. If the wood looks similar to the picture, you might look for a builder of guitars or violins. Maybe send Seth a picture (when the tree is cut?) to see if it's got the right look. [email protected]
