It can be more than one hero, but whose use of effects do you love and/or find inspiring? It can be anyone, from someone you took lessons from to Geezer Butler to someone who (gasp) plays a different instrument

I'm very inspired by Tim Lefebvre's use and choice of effects, but in practice don't actually find that a lot of the music he makes grabs me. Here's someone who overlaps with him in the pedals she uses, but I like how she uses them more

I'm sure this makes me lame somehow, but for me it's Justin Chancellor, Tim Commerford, and Christopher Wolstenholme. I enjoy how they use FX for emphasis and mood throughout the songs.

Old guy checking in. This will seem vanilla, but... John Entwistle was my tone epiphany. That's still relevant because OD/distortion is an effect.

I especially love his Fender (Live at Leeds) and Alembic periods. He pioneered the clean rig / dirty rig tone that I've been chasing for decades. I love the multiband pedals that have come out fairly recently because they can allow a single rig to approximate that enormous multi-rig tone.

I also enjoy Entwistle's later (Buzzard) period where his gear and FX got a lot fancier, but I try to keep things simple, so I just stick with distortion (sometimes multiple distortions stacked) and occasionally comp.

Since you allowed other instruments, it's a 50/50 tie between Bill Frisell and Robert Fripp.

Lots to choose from... for bass, Tony Levin's compression / octave sounds on fretless (with a pick, I believe) are really great:

Justin Chancellor for me. Big time. But also Claypool, Timmy C, dude from Living Color (I can't remember his name atm). Anton Dang, Nick Thieneman, Brian Cook, Justin Medal Johnson. There are a ton of guys actually. Those are the first ones that come to mind though.

Michael the G is soft Gordon. Entwistle is my overall bass hero, and his effects rigs were insane prior to his passing, but Cactus, Cactus, Cactus!
