Why all bass players everywhere of course. I think the typical bass line since the 80s has been less involved or interesting than prior decades.
Call it a change in style? Or, think about what happened in the 80s... music on TV, and now youtube. Playing music really changed to include a lot of things that are not music. I heard a story about a local band that got signed, and in a pre-tour "meeting" the record company had a box of clothes that they would be wearing while on the road, and also booked a couple of the guys to get hair cuts! Obviously not worried about the bass lines! Priorities changed. To be a successful musician in these modern times you have to spend a LOT of time on things like promotion, management, booking, artwork, self-producing records, social media, etc... it has really become a do it all yourself business,, which sets you up for becoming a jack of all trades and master of none. It leaves a lot less time for things like learning your instrument.
How come we don't all play tuba? How come we don't all play R 3 5 b7 lines (a la 50's)? Things change. Survival goes to the flexible.
