i was looking at my profile today and realized i signed up for TB on July 6, 2007. that date stood out in my head for a minute until i realized what it was..... when i was younger my uncle kevin was in a punk band. and of course being the cool SOB he was he was the bass player. i loved watching him play, he amazed me whether it was playing something down and dirty with a pick or playing happy birthday to my grandma while i screamed it from the top of the stairs. this was my first contact with the instrument i am obsessed with today. summer of 1995 i was going into my senior year of high school. my best friend jay had been playing guitar for about 4 years or so but i dont think i ever took an interest in it until then. i was watching him play one day and i said to him i wanted to learn how to play. he said why dont you learn to play bass so we can start a band. so i called my uncle kevin and told him i wanted to start playing bass he was so excited. only one problem........ i needed a bass. the next day in the paper my journey began....... there was an ad for an ibanez roadstar II and a peavey TKO 65. my uncle kevin took jay and myself to check it out. and the rest is history.... my friend jay died in my arms on February 10, 2003 he was 25. i was living with him and his parents while i was in the middle of a messy break up with a girlfriend. and he was messed up with some things he should not have been. there is not a day that goes by that i dont thank him for pushing me toward the bass. my uncle kevin sold me my first american built bass not to forget he took me and jay on my last ride before i married a bass. he sold me my first guild pilot bass. i guess he planted the seed in my head to play bass and my friend jay came along watered it. my uncle kevin died February 14, 2007 he was 38. these two people were not only my loved ones and close friends. but they are the only reason i play and love the bass today. so now for the reason July 6, stood out in my mind. July 6 was the day my uncle kevin was born. i remember the day i signed up for TB it was like a lightning bolt hit me in the ass, i said why have i never seen or heard of this before. i guess it was my uncles way of opening my eyes once again. i know noone really knows me on here, i generally keep to myself and read and absorb everything i can. if noone reads this or posts a comment about it that is fine. it just feels good to talk about it once in awhile. thanks to everyone for listening. ron
Very noble motivations you have here. If you can play as good as you wrote this post then you've definitely succeeded somewhere.
Right here our stories are the same. 'He' was a guitarist who already had a rhythm guitar player & drummer lined up- last thought: bass guy. Also, this was about 1978, IIRC. Plus I used to play punk rock- still do on occasion.
I agree, it's slightly more awesome then Maki's asian girl talk, which is good, because I REALLY like those girls.
Way to go Unkie Kev! It's great to personally know people who inspire you. They seem to keep that fire lit. Congrats and keep rattlin' the nads!
thanks spector ray. i have to say that having inspiration that close to you keeps the fire lit forever.
That made me Cry! What a great story of inspiration, and how tragic that the ones you loved left so soon. Now if you could only fit all that on a tee-shirt for the next time some dumba$$ asks you why you play bass!
Great story, bro. Thanks for sharing, and for rocking your friend's memory. Plus you have an awesome dog. Good friend of mine had a pit girldog named Nala, years back. She was a sweetie.
i have 3 pits. nala, dory, and stella. i have an obsession with naming my dogs after disney characters. i put a pic of the 3 in this thread later on tonight.
