Why is it at BBQs us men love to stand by the grill?

During Memorial Day I was grilling for my fiancé and kids. I am in my zone flipping burgers smelling that charcoal and I'm looking around the park.

I look around and see all these other family's BBQing. All different cultures, Hispanic, Indian, Asian, black people, white people are all in the same formation. All of us men surround the grill no matter what language we speak or what we grill.

My fiancé asks why as men we do this why we all surround the grill. I couldn't answer maybe just in our DNA no matter what part of the world were from. Does anyone know why we do this?

For millions of years, male humans hunted.
I assume after a successful hunt (and after the harnessing of fire) this was closely followed by roasting the animal.
This is over a million years of instinctual behavior in action.

It's primal. When cavemen first began eating cooked meat, it changed our species. It allowed us to eat more meat, get more protein, and evolve bigger brains. Maybe the man that stood around the grill was able to eat sooner than the man that was dillydallying away from the grill. The dillydallyer went hungry and didn't reproduce.

In case the cook takes ill, someone is there to take over. Its' that serious.

I mean, think of the alternative...
Listening to soccer mom's gossip about Mrs. Johnson's new faux spanish tile floor she bought at home depot?
I for one choose to savor the smoke of burning animal carcasses.

The engine noise drowns out the cackling of the womenfolk.

Grilled vegetables are good too. Especially when served with grill flesh.

    Why does anybody do anything?

Why answer a question with a question?

    Why even ask questions?

I'm thinking the dude dillydallying was probably getting some tail and less likely to eat undercooked meat that would make him sick or worse. Dillydallying genes win out. In most hunter/gatherer cultures the women process and cook the meat. I like grilling because most women complain about the heat and play with the meat too much ruining it(there's a double entendre for ya!). Plus it gives me an excuse to drink more beer and stay out of the women's way.

There's gotta be a balance between dillydallying and grill circling. Everything in moderation.
