Sony's rootkits, by design, are virtually undetectable by anti-virus and anti-spam products. Even if they are detected, they integrate themselves so completely into the operating system that they are almost impossible to remove without going through a clean OS installation. Here's the skinny
It only installs the rootkit if you have "Auto-play" turned on. So you can still buy CDs from sony, just have auto play turned off.
Dear Friends: You have successfully missed the point. Don't buy Sony, not because it's dangerous to you but because they have behaved unethically, and if they aren't brought to heel the next attack will be aimed at you. We shouldn't reward companies that act in this way regardless of whether we ourselves suffer for it. Kelly (from a Mac)
Read this on slashdot last week. I won't buying from Sony until they get themselves sued into a corner.
They've gone too far. And they know it now. Best of luck to them in attempting to restore consumer goodwill. I'm not buying their stuff either.
your right! everytime i turn on my damn computer, it freezes for about ten minutes, and when it unfreezes, a norton popup comes up and say that the FURootkit trojan has been cleaned and deleted!
i may have been out making a cuppa when the memo came round, but what have sony done that is so unethical?
Click the link. In a nutshell, in an effort to enforce copyrights, the designed a stealth mechanism called a rootkit that behaves like a trojan virus, and can not be detected or cleaned from your machine. Already the Sony rootkit has been reverse engineered by virus writers and turned loose. There basic MO was, we'll install stuff on your PC that you can't take off with out telling you about it, to protect us against the oddchance that you might possibly one day be obliged to share the music... It could be considered a little heavy handed...
This is a lot like StarForce copy protection for PC games. I won't buy any games, even as gifts for others, that have Starforce protection. Guess where I stand with Sony?
