so, as i posted in another thread, i just got a body back from wilkins. it's a USACG quilt top on mahogany that's going to sport the wenge neck that's sitting right next to it at the moment. anyhoo, here's some before and after pics for those of you that may be looking for a finish. i'm REALLY happy with with how it turned out. finish is "tiger eye" and it's about $40 more than his standard finishes because it's a two-stage dye job. i apologize for my lousy photography.... before. wet to show the quilt better. after.
O wow! I'm anxious to see what kind of neck is gonna go on that beast of a body. *birdseye maple fretless fingerboard* cough
Now that's unique. And beautiful. I believe Wilkins does the US Laklands too. I have a Scheff Deluxe with a natural Tiger top. When I visited Lakland you could tell the US bodies from the Koreans from 50 paces. Extra $40 well spent!
back is a nice dark brown with a slight reddish tint. the rest of the plan right now is.... wenge neck with big honkin' BML tuners (already have it) audere pre (on order) nordstrand MM type (2 coil) + "modern" jazz neck (need to order still) - though i've got some $ on account at bass northwest and they have barts, so i may waffle and get those hipshot "A" type brass bridge (still need to order) i'll prolly order the rest of the stuff tomorrow. needless to say i'm anticipating a big fat tone.
I hate to say it, but I prefer the wet, unfinished look. That with a gloss finish alone would have made a beauty. ...but the Tiger Eye is stunning as well - to certainly didn't get shafted by Wilkins. Enjoy her!
And Sadowsky, and Spector, and Valenti D ). Your right he does great finish work. Like this one too!!
For those who may be interested. Here are just a few of the companies that Pat Wilkins does finishes for besides USA Laklands and Sadowsky. Warrior Spector Steinberger( Epiphone) ESP Schecter Fernandes Some MTD's Dingwall Stambaugh Hanewinkle Jordan Violins Wood Violins and these are a few of the companies that Pat use to do finishes for. Adler Tom Anderson Pensa Suhr John Suhr Tobias Fender Custom Shop Yamaha Ibanez Villette-Citron Zeta Violins Pat is also the original guitar painter for Schecter guitars of the 70's.and hes painted a guitar or Bass for probably every major player out there.
For those 'natural' folks, here is that Scheff of mine...it's really hard to close the case on this one.
i don't disagree - the clear woulda looked really cool too, especially if i'd gone with a maple neck, but i leaned toward a darker finish when i decided to go with a wenge neck. kinda the same 'dark on dark' look that i liked when i finished the guy in front here...
