Hello I decided I wanted to try fretless so bought one of them bryce 5 string fretless jazz bass type things [and il be honest its realy not bad for the money] I am embarking on the usual upgrade mission... so new strings, nicer looking pick gaurd, series/parralel switch better strings knobs jack socket etc. so we get onto pickups... Im thinking of buying one of the wilkinson 5 string sets [im leaning towards the more expensive alnico version rather than the cheaper ceramics]. before i take the plunge any opinions on this being a worthwhile upgrade or any other similar price ranged suggestions??? think the missus would go mad if i spent much more iv bought 4 basses in the last 2 weeks and i actualy play guitar lol hope everyone is well looking forward to this upgrade Mark
@MarkkJames It's hard to go wrong with Trev Wilkinson gear, the man's been in business 40 odd year If your Bryce has ceramic I'd go for Alnico for a different flavour.
Yes- Wilkinson AlNiCos. Are you in US?? Try Guitar Madness for good prices, free, fast shipping, and service. The site has a lot of “higher end” budget pickups like Wilkinson, Artec, and GHS. I think they offer a lot of value AND tone for less $$$..I’ll have a look and edit in if avail.
OOPS! Guitar Madness site down for now- problems with USPS apparently..bummer- But Yes!! Go with AlNiCo Wilkinson 5l string bass- Artec May have something as well- both wound in South Korea, and good quality.
im in the uk [right on the south coast to be precise] ive ordered the alnico version, its 50% more expensive so im guessing it will will be better in general i dont know though, no idea what pickups are in there magnet wise either but itl be some low end stuff as its a £!20 bass delivered. so far got a series parralel switch the wilkinson alnicos and a better scratch plate on its way.... im tempted to do the bridge and tuners next though....... and maybe the nut then i guess the rest of the electronics but does it really need a pre amp? ive bought 3 basses in the last week or two so i should realy slow down but i just cant lol many thanks again guys. i need to learn to set up next i guess. i mean how the hell do you intonate without a marker for the where your intonating from? [ie no fret or lining] anyway hope all is well picks to be shown soon anyone got any other ideas? it is my only fretless but iv got the cort gb35 im going to mod up soon, a gear for music 5 string cheapo i got for £60 delivered im unsure what to do with but its the spare. ive got this fretless, a a left handed 4 string stagg thing [i play left and right handed guitar but bass mostly right handed so this is sat doing not much, and last but by far not least ive got an esp/ltd d5 being delivered tommorow or monday so iv got a few different tools to hand.... any way cheers guys Mark
Yeah- I see the Alnico Wilkinsons are twice as much as their “entry level” Jazz-5 ceramics. You should be pretty happy with them I believe. I’ve looked at those Stagg basses- if your not afraid to set up yourself, I imagine you can get them to be a good player with very little coin. Your intonation question is a good one!!! How DO you intonate a fretless??? I’ve never thought about that!! I’ll leave it to more experienced members to respond, but I’m sure a good tape measure would be required...or helpful. Cheers- Carl from Sunny Arizona..
well the wilkinsons are here it was a bit of a harder choice because being a metal guitarist for so long normaly i prefer ceramic and usualy higher output is a good thing but with the bass im realising that there is much less in a way of a definition as to what "THE" metal bass sound is, it is litteraly it seems more of a case of what you can make work in a given situation. [thats why im thinking i might get away with using a fretless here lol] yeah the intonation question only just dawned on me but its a big one. ahhhhhh well its a learning curve lol will get more pics up as the mods come along
Pics would be great!! I think “Metal Bass” is something that any good bass can get to with a nice fuzz/OD pedals and a robust preamp. No need for an onboard preamp- great pedal preamps there with an XLR output to board. The key (in my VERY humble opinion) is to get a bass going with great overall balance, beefy lows, and enough mids to cut through a mix- your harmonics, overdrive and tone can be shaped by string choice (rounds or flats) and EQ setting at preamp!and amp as well as onboard tone control. Now “fretless metal”....I’m not sure I’ve ever heard that!!!
I've heard it used in death metal but not in this style Its not my main bass that i got today An ltd d5 and it's lush but a fretless 5 string is a useful extra tool to have which i can see me using alot Currently got a line 6 x3 live and a m13 not the best (its my guitar rig) but tempted to get a more bass specific set up
So on the series paralel switch diagram it shows a wire going to the top of one of the volume pots which doesn't have a tab on for it to attach to Errrrr is that meant to just go to ground or???? Got Wilkinsons in but wired as per standard until i can work out the diagram Been distracted with the ltd d5. Which is just wow in my opinion
still not got this sorted lol do i just follow this https://i.pinimg.com/736x/91/9c/9d/919c9d5d7683767ee9cfaefc6bfc7773--guitar-building-seymour.jpg and just assume its the same just the switch is seperate from the tone pot [i just went and got a toggle switch] il try put a new pic up in a bit of her with her new pick guard and probably realy stupid idea for switch placement but it meant minimum hole making
obviously not screwed together as i havnt wired it up yet but new pick guard and switch mocked up to give some sort of idea of what she may look like not too bad for the money
im tempted to do a second one now with the ceramic pickups and a different pick gaurd [spare of course]
