Will the Sun damage Tolex?

Discussion in 'Recording Gear and Equipment [BG]' started by LowDown Hal, Apr 16, 2009.

  1. Bleach it out or anything?

My cabinets are in front of a west facing window and now that we finally had a few decent days weather it got me wondering if I need to rearrange the room.

    THANKS

Sun exposure will damage ANYTHING if given enough time. First it will fade colors, later it will generally make things brittle. I have seen plastics fall apart when touched after years of sunlight exposure. I have seen fabrics fade badly after a few months' exposure.

For this reason, I have inexpensive opaque curtains on the room where my guitars hang - I don't want any direct sunlight getting into the room.

    Sunlight darkens many woods.
If UV gets through the windows. Some windows block UV.
But right - many plastics fade and turn brittle.
Tolex - who cares? Let it wear out so you can get something new in a few years.
