Will this hurt the finish?

After searching around for a while and not finding much, I was hoping you guys could answer a real quick question for me.

If was to put a picture or a playing card underneath the pickguard, would it be potentially damaging to the finish if I took off the pickguard again? I vaguely remember someone mentioning that a bassist has done this in the past with a playing card (the name escapes me at the moment) but couldn't find that post for the life of me.

I'm mostly concerned because I live in a fairly humid area and I've seen how easily they can cause problems when they're stacked for prolonged times.

Probably an easy answer for somebody, I just don't know enough about the finish of the bass to say one way or another. By the way, it's a black finished Fender Jazz if that matters for anything. Thanks for everyone's help!

I have no clue, but why on earth would you want to put a picture or playing card UNDER your pickguard?:eyebrow:

Is it a see-through pickguard or something?

Knew someone would ask. It's just a sentimental thing. A close family member passed away and I thought of putting their picture under the pickguard because they were a big inspiration. And, no, it's not a see-through pickguard (but now you've got me thinking).

why don't you put it on the pickguard facing the bass?

How do you mean? Put it flipped-over under the pickguard or ontop of it?

  6. If it's under your pickguard, why would the finish matter there?

I used to be real picky about what I did to my bass, I wanted it to look spotless and perfect. The pickguard was a little out of place and it needed redrilled holes, so I did that. The pickguard covers up the old holes and I don't mind at all.

It's not a huge concern as I don't plan on selling the bass or removing the pickguard entirely but I was just curious to see what might happen.

  8. What kind of bass do you have? Depending on the year and the type, if it's a polyurethane finish (like MIM fenders or anything else mass production), that thing could survive a nuke blast and still be shiny. If it's a satin finish, like older MIA Fenders (and most custom ones) then it'll wear away with just the sweat of your hands playing it.

It's a Geddy Lee Jazz. MIJ and from what I can find between 2002 - 2004. I'm assuming it'd be polyurethane. Sounds like I've got a pretty good answer. Thanks for everyone's input!

If you put in under, it'd make more sense if you have a see through pickguard.

And sorry to hear about your family member.
