Winter 2017 Build Off - Khazâd V

    This is for the Winter 2017 Build Off. Into the fray we go!

    This bass build will be a challenge for me on a number of levels.

    But first, The Specs:
    • 30" short scale
    • 5 strings, narrow spaced (16.5mm), tuned EADGC
    • Fretted, 24 frets
    • Neck-through construction
    • Headless
    • Hipshot headless hardware, black
    • EMG MM5TW pickup
    • Active Volume and Tone controls
    • 9v operation
    • 3-piece maple neck
    • Poplar body wings and backstrap
    • Makassar ebony fretboard
    • One double-action truss rod, head-adjustable
    • Brass nut and side-dots
    • Pearl lime green lacquer paint, neck and body
    • High-gloss lacquer clear top coat
    • Khuzdul rune inlay on the fingerboard
    • Dimensions:
      • 35" long
      • 11.5" wide
      • 1.5" thick body
    • Will fit in a guitar gig bag or case.
      • I'm planning on using the Gator GB-ELEC case for it.
    Design:

    Challenges faced:
    I've never built a neck-through bass before.
    I've never used poplar before.
    I've never built a short scale bass before.
    I've never done a headless bass before.
    I've never done inlay before.
    I've only done one painted finish before.

    Here's the color I'm going to be using:
    V6DQ3Zs.
    It's from Duplicolor's Paint Shop system, called "Sublime Green Pearl". I'm using it mostly because I happen to have a bunch of it around. I also have jet black, but I'm saving that for a stealthy black fretless later (black paint, ebony board, black hardware, black strings).

    Well, considering Khazad means "Dwarves" in J. R. R. Tolkien's made up Dwarfish language, I think the NSA would be quite bored indeed.



    Anyway, I went and got some wood today.

    WsAgr8D.

    That's 3bdft of 8/4 Poplar and 1.5bdft of 4/4 Hard maple. Cost me about $13.

    Super exciting stuff, I know.

    So, I would like some input. These are the two runic glyphs I'm interested in inlaying at the 12th fret. I only want to do one of them. Which one do you guys thing would look the coolest? (The glyphs do have specific meanings, but I'm less interested in that than I am which would look best and go with the design best. I do realize they aren't that different in appearance.)

    another vote for Okmith. Okib looks like a prescription symbol.

    I was leaning toward Okib, but I do agree it's a bit busy.

    Okib means "The art of strife" and Okmith means "The art of song." So Okmith is a more logical choice, if perhaps a bit less prosaic. I think I'll go with Okmith to save myself some work.

    I'm probably just going to inlay with pearloid or acrylic of some fashion. Woodcraft has some really cool acrylic pen turning blanks that would make nice inlay material.

    So, neck-through.

    Since I'm starting with 4/4 stock for the neck, I think I have two ways of going about building the body:

    The "set-thru" neck:
    IZawPAZ.

    Or the traditional "neck-thru" neck:
    cwT4frs.

    What I'm interested in is which, if either, is better.

    If I go the 'set-thru' route, I'll glue the body up as if it was a bolt-on bass, and then route a huge neck pocket that goes all the way down the length of the body. I've done all bolt-on necks prior to this, so it seems, superficially at least, to be the *best* (or at least most familiar) option for me, if not the absolute easiest.

    If I go the 'neck-thru' route, with wings attached to a neck core, I'll have to add a bunch of thickness to the back of the neck where it intersects with the body wings. This seems like the easiest option, but perhaps also the most difficult to get everything level, in terms of attaching the wings to the neck beam, since there are more glue joints involved.

    Any thoughts? (I'm not interested in the nomenclature, or in debating the proper names of these building techniques. As far as I'm concerned, they're both just different ways of achieving the same objective.)

    As far as getting everything level -- my assumption would be that you have to level off both the front and the back if you do the standard neck-thru, and you have to level off only the front if you do the set-thru. In either case, the front gets leveled only in the area past the fretboard.

    If you do the set-thru with parallel sides, you could have pretty simply clamping, just down from the top on the neck beam. The sides would be governed by the tightness of the joint, and not clampable. If I were to do this though, I think I would want to clamp the whole thing down to a rigid surface, and then put light clamping on the wing areas (as well as the heavy clamping over the neck beam) to ensure that the wigs don't pul back or forwards while the glue dries.

    ^ Yeah. I'm also thinking maybe some short dowel pins to lock the neck on place for gluing into the pocket/slot (slocket?) for the set-thru option. Like where the pickup route will be, and under where the bridge will go, so they get removed or hidden from the surface when it's finished.

    Could also use dowel pins to help keep the wings aligned properly with neck-thru.
