My build with be a slightly upscaled Danelectro longhorn body. The upscale is to accommodate a 34” scale jazz neck.

The stock Squier Headstock will be glued, reshaped and Modified to look like a Teisco Del Rey. Life size drawing kindly provided by @JIO. I am indebted good sir.
The pickups are cheap Chinese Rick style pickups used in a slightly unconventional manner. I will be making the tailpiece from a solid brass cupped drawer pull. There will also be homemade tuners done in a very unconventional fashion. Body cap wood is 65 year old redwood from my Pop’s garage, and the main body from 2x4’s I kept from his old work bench. Pickguard and headstock cover will be made from scratch as well. Not from pickguard material.

The cool thing about having the Del Rey hs triangular plate on the front of your modded Fender hs is it will cover/hide your filled tuner-peg holes. For the rear, you could route that same shape 1/8" and drop in a thin laminute of wood or pg material. (for looks) But.., while you're at it - you could also do that hs disc/weight thing that helps end dead-spots on the 5th fret G string. I saw it on another thread by John K - 3/8" tungsten cylinder weights (usually used for adding weight to Soap Box Derby cars. If Anyone has access to that please post. The way I look at modding - once you start you might as well do as much as possible.

Agreed!!! Covering the filled holes was a plus. My custom tuners should be layed out by next week. Thanks for all the help @JIO !!

Lovin' it. I have a set of those pickups as well. Curious to hear how they sound.

Life’s been more than a little crazy. Garage is finally an acceptable workspace. Got some measuring and drawing done this evening. No real sawdust. Some of that will come tomorrow. In the meantime...

I cut the standard mounts off of this solid brass cup pull that will act as my tailpiece. I’ll make the bridge itself soon.

Thanks to @JIO I have a scale headstock pattern for the Teisco. I ran off a few copies and got to cuttin. Still playing with positioning. The only reason I’m investing this level into it is because the headstock cover and pickguard material is being made from scratch and I need to narrow it down beforehand.

I’ll be fiberglassing printed material like these bowls have been done. Not my work but it’s the only example of what I wanna do I could find.

Awesome stuff so far! Where'd you get those pickups? I've been looking for a set like that!

It is this set with the trim rings removed. I needed to do so obviously with the way I’m mounting them. Hoping I have enough time to make my trim ring and get it plated otherwise I may have to settle for stainless and break an elbow polishing it!

Thanks! I'd seen a similar set on ebay a while ago but did not see any the last time I checked. For that price I'll probably snag a set right now!

How will you secure the cover to the body? Looks like you have already removed the posts, but I'd get another and leave the 2 posts, flatten the rounded ends and super-glue magnetic discs on each post and drop 2 in the shallow holes drilled in the body. The combination of a shaft for each post and the magnets would be more than sufficient to keep it in place until it was needed to be 'lifted' off. Plus it would keep the look clean. (no screws)

I figured the pulling leverage would be too much for those two screws alone. A clean look though for sure. I was planning on using 5 standard bridge screws set in the flange and countersunk. I am drilling it from the back and running the strings through it so the removability isn’t a necessity. The cleanliness is a thought.... thanks @JIO you always have astute observations!

40 dollars worth of craigslist fodder will be my test bed for my tuner design. Just gotta plug some holes and drill some new ones! If it works I’ll cut the headstock and add the necessary material for the Del Rey headstock conversion!!

Also had some success on the “can I take a random piece of material and make a sturdy piece of pickguard worthy material?” front. Wants to curl a bit. A few more tests to come. Now to select the sacrificial Hawaiian shirt for the job...
Note, this test was not done by myself. My man Steve did it as a proof of concept. I will be making the final product for this project. If any of that matters.

How'd Steve do that? It's it on a backing material?

@Will_White Material face down, resin back and then fiber and more resin to reinforce it. Preps it against a pane of glass. Keeps the texture of cloth, which is what I wanted. Probably using a barkcloth material myself.
