I watch these threads to get humbled, every time I get a little cocky, seeing this kind of work brings me back to earth quick. Such a nice mix of artistry and science, I love this sh#t!
Sanded with oil and 400 grit. Next 600 and 1200 grit oil sanding with Crimson high build oil. It's thicker so the slurry it makes should fill the pores a bit easier.
Crimson penetrating finish oil is quite thin so it works fine when sanding. Drying takes around four hours. For sanding and additional coats about two hours is enough.
Some more oil sanding done. 800 grit, feels very smooth and starting to look nice. Crimson oils work just fine, don't have nasty smell like Tru oil and dry faster than Liberon. 1000 grit sanding later today. Then I'm just adding light coats of oil to have the gloss I want. I'm aiming for sort of in-between satin and gloss. I want it to feel like wood.
Had to try and see what it will look like. I think this bass will look just great.
I found neck J covers while organizing my workshop so this bass may see MPU custom pickups as well. Now I just have to make up my mind about the design. Sidewinder, multicoil, split coil... so many options.
Damn, that looks great! Is that a Hipshot saddle and tailpiece, if so, how do you like it? Thinking a chrome one of those my next build.
I used penetrating oil first. I sosked the body with it first, wiped it so that it stayed wet for 10-15 minutes, then started sanding with 400 grit. After that coat dried, I oil sanded with penetrating oil and 800 grit. Then changed to high build oil and 1000 grit, followed with grey Mirkalon 2500 grit sanding pad and high build oil. Last two coats were just wiped with high build, then wiped the excess oil with coarsish tissue paper. Now the bass has nice satin sheen and it's curing until tomorrow. I'm going to mount the parts on the bass tomorrow. Pickups are mounted when I have made them, sometime next week.
Almost there. Truss rod cover and MPU pickups to come. Truss rod cover will be flame maple and there's propably cnc or laser engraving included. Pickups at the moment are MEC and they do not sound bad at all. Neck pickup is single coil so some hum is there when soloed. I'll make the new neck and bridge pickups split coils. After the oil finish has cured long enough (no odor at all) I'll wax the bass. Compared to Tru oil Crimson oil loses the odor faster. For heavy build up thickness I'd still use Tru oil. For thinner finish I prefer Crimson oil.
