Winter Build Off 2022 - Prizes

I get to see everyone else work on their bass builds step by step, it seems only fair that you should get to see the pedals come together.

The winner for each category will get to choose either a Renewal Compressor or a Rebirth Preamp. Renewal is an OTA (operational transconductance amplifier)-based compressor tuned specifically for bass. Rebirth is a 12AT7 high-voltage tube preamp, also obviously tuned for bass. I finished up the designs a couple weeks ago and finally got boards in, which I hope to finish putting together sometime this weekend.

I use mostly SMD components for size and ease of assembly, but on these I decided to hide all the SMD on the bottom of the boards to leave the top nice and clean.


After boards have been soldered up and tested I'll be working with a local artist to get enclosure designs before working on the boxes.

Tiny update, I finally got the boards fully put together and both work great. I just got an order of enclosures in yesterday, I'm going to try to get some boxes together tonight.

 

Speaking of which

I was able to get the Renewal enclosure on the CNC before dinner. Yes the CNC is big enough to do a body, no I've never done one. One day I'll get adventurous, but until then it's just for pedal stuff.

 

And done. It takes about 9 minutes for this box, which is slower than someone with a template and a drill press could do it, but the holes are way more precise than my clumsy hands could get.

 

Getting the box for Rebirth Preamp milled now, that one takes a bit longer due to the tube vent slots, but still only about 20 minutes.
