Winter Build Off 2024 - Best Bass for Having a Contingency Plan

Here's my Plan B entry in the event that my overly ambitious 10 string fretless doesn't get done in time. I find that having two basses to work on at once makes the process flow a bit better. While waiting for glue to dry in one build, I can work on another.

I jumped online today and ordered hardware for this one. Right now, all I have is wood and templates.

With that said, here's a bare bones start...

Since buying a big load of macassar ebony last year, I have wanted to build a 100% ebony bass.

The end grain is simply stunning. This lump of wood would almost certainly be better put to use in the hands of a chopping board maker, but that ain't me

I have been worried that a solid ebony bass would be way too heavy (even by my standards), and I have missed my short scale Mensinger Cazpar 6 string since selling it a while back.

Solution - a short scale bass with a tiny body.

I figure it is probably a right of passage for an amateur luthier to pay homage to Carl Thompson, so what better time than now.

I roughed the body wings with the bandsaw, then promptly destroyed a pattern following router bit trimmer to shape. This wood is hard! Smoke from a sharp router bit hard.

After destroying some more router bits putting a roundover on the wings and a 45 degree chamfer in the scroll, this is where I got to today.

Notwithstanding destroying tools, this should be a fairly straightforward build. There's nothing especially complicated about it, just some fine timber with a shape unashamedly stolen from the Stradivarius of bass guitars.
 
I found some dimensions of the bridge I ordered, so neck work can start on this one.

from the get go, I have focussed on getting the most guitar from the smaller amount of ebony, AKA minimising useless offcuts.

While I have several pieces big enough for a one piece neck on this short scale, there would be a lot of wood go to waste, which does not sure well with me when using hard to find (in Australia at least) exotics.

This is a real measure 15 times, cut once kind of affair.

I cut a long 50mm x 50mm strip of one of my boards

Then I cut it in half lengthwise and flipped

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that this is a bit short!

I can trim 6mm off the whole blank for a fingerboard, then cut 20mm off the back of the neck up to where the body joins the neck. I can then use the off cut to lengthen the neck.

This probably isn't making much sense… pictures to come soon which should make sense of it all. All my clamps are currently occupied on my other WBO build, so I'm sitting in the sun, bored!
 
It didn't feel right to make a solid ebony bass that actually had 5-6 pieces glued together for the neck.

Solution - cut me a big length of ebony for a one piece neck (two kinda - it has a scarf jointed headstock). Here's the token "wood in clamps" shot

Im stuck on strings for this beast. TI do a set of flatwounds for 6 string short scale, which is somewhat of a rarity. Another option is some custom roundwounds from Newtone, which will allow me to get a fairly beefy low B.

This bass will have a single humbucker close to the bridge. Do people have any thoughts as to flats vs rounds on a six string short scale? I'm thinking with the bridge oriented pickup, flats should still have a fair bit of bark, and I am a very poor slap bassist, so I'm leaning on that direction, but I'm keen for other's thoughts.
 
The poll over in the strings section shows rounds as the most popular by a mile/1.609344 km

On Electric, I'm a tapes fan - one of the least popular options in the strings poll. I don't care about that, I like the feel, the sound, and the near infinite life.

On Upright it's gotta be flats because I use a bow. Also they cost to much to change. And they last. TI are not bad at all if you like flats.

So, ask the guy in the mirror, unless you want to get rounds to be like the popular kids...

The closer the pickup is to the bridge, the more honk you'll get and the less brassy the tone will be. It'll be a pretty thin sound, so I'd probably go with the TI set; you won't be hurting for high frequencies and will basically be Jaco all the time.
 
Time for an update on this one.

The neck is routed for the trussrod and stainless reinforcement.

Messing about with some finishes on some offcuts, it has become apparent that much of the beautiful figure will disappear when I finish it, leading me to think it needed some colour.

Cue a fretboard with a swamp mahogany extension.

I figured I would do a truss rod cover with the same wood, and maybe a volume knob and input jack mount.

Then I totally went off the rails, and thought if I'm.not building a Carl Thompson rainbow bass, perhaps is should have a rainbow pickup.

It took me two goes to build this, and while I'm thrilled with it, I think it's just too overpowering with the very small body size of this bass.

To compound the issue, the pickup is glued into the case.

Next step is to decide whether to keep it, or what pickup to replace it with (probably something affordable with a descrete ebony cover).

The fingerboard will get epoxied on today, and then I'll start tackling the frets. Given that I don't want to be wrestling the body while fretting, I'm going to attempt to fret the neck before the wings go on.

What do most builders do with frets on neck throughs? Fret first or fret after the body goes on?

I figured my multilaminate pickup didn't quite tie in, but at the same time, I had invested enough time into it that I really wanted to use it.

I found enough offcuts to do a 12th fret inlay using the same pattern, along with a truss rod access cover.

There's obviously a lot of tidying up to do, but I'm happy with where it's heading.

Jsut for laughs, here's the neck blank next to another ebony neck I'm doing for one of my 39 inch scale long black models. Just a small difference in length!

After levelling the fretboard and applying a thin layer of CA glue as a sealer, the board has a more consistent sheen and I think the pickup is going to work. Tough luck if it doesn't - I can't get the pickup out of the shelf, and the 12th only would need a steadier hand than mine to remove!

Search in the LC. There's a couple of threads about making knobs. I think @TerribleTim68 started one about using a lathe but there were a number of posts about using the drill press and hole saws and some other techniques. I did quite a few with a 3/4" tenon cutter and my bench top drill press before I got a lathe.

Edit: found one. I can't seem to find Tim's thread. Hopefully he'll point us in the right direction.

I think the hole saw and drill bit in a pedestal drill idea is quite workable for me. I'll try on some craps and report back. Anything to avoid fretting this damn neck!


Adding the 12th fret inlay and truss rod cover was a really good solution. Now the three patterns tie the whole bass together. Well done!

I fretted the neck yesterday. I was about to give up and throw my saw in the bin, but after a quick read of some old threads here, I found the tip about running a fretsaw through a candle before cutting a slot. Hot damn, did it make life easier. Much fewer slips with the saw and gouges in the fretboard when the saw isn't jamming on every stroke.

Delving further into the wisdom of the talkbass collective, I managed to make myself a volume knob. I used the trick of drilling the hole for the shaft first, then cutting the perimeter of the knob with a hole saw second. It worked a treat!

Next job is to carve the neck. A job I'm really not looking forward to. I have a feeling this ebony might wear out a Shinto task before I'm done.
