Fellow TBr's: Due to a growing interest and need, I have put together a fairly detailed refinishing guide (or manual, if you will) to help folks have the confidence to attempt refinishing and refining a Wishbass on their own. Keep in mind that I am no luthier, or even any kind of master carpenter, just a guy who likes to work with his hands and make things "my own". Since there is usually more than one way to do these types of things, I am encouraging others with similar experiences to write them up and submit them here. As you probably already well know, a Wishbass comes out of the shop begging for attention and there is no reason why the average person should be afraid to jump in and make improvements to these bass guitars. I have found a lot of joy and satisfaction doing just that and I know others have too. It is my intent to spread that joy to yet others with little previous experience doing this kind of work. Besides, Wishbass has gotten a bum rap in my opinion and this forum will aid in discovering how unique and fun they can be with just a little work. My current guide does not include any photos, but those will be added at a later date when I begin to work on a new Wishbass. All of these techniques can of course be applied to other makes of guitars as well, so please enjoy! Let me hear for you ...
Is that a Wishbass in your avatar? (It doesn't look like it, but I haven't taken a look at Wishbasses recently so he might have added new designs...)
Ashtray; Technically, my avatar bass is a Wishnevsky instrument, but built by the same man, just part of his hollow-body line of instruments. It's called a Banana bass and there is a recent separate thread for it under "49sfine Bass Pic". Thanks for your interest! ...
Great job there 49. Here is my contribution to the Wishbass refinishing thread: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=DHXDIFVW You can download mine there. I cannot upload mine directly, because mine is about 2M because of the pics. Enjoy!
Folks: JoJoBean's guide is really worth looking into - clear instructions, & lots of kool photos, which really add a whole other dimension! I wish I had thought of that earlier. Oh well, someday ...
mongo2: I'm ahead of you - sent it to him abut 30 minutes ago, with a short note. Thanks for the suggestion though ... Rip Topaz; Thanks a lot -glad you found it useful.
Here's a picture of my latest refin Wishbass, a lobe #1010. It's the lighter of the two basses. Follow 49sfine's instructions and your Wishbass can look like this one too! Altenatively click the link in my signature and bid on this bass, which is currently for sale on eBay!
Next time I'm ordering the bass unfinished (as Wish suggested in the first place). That being said, I love mine & play it all the time. I had my tech drop an EMG neck pup that came from my Spector when I modded it & it's a real bulldozer now. It's a 5 string fretless with a 36" scale.
Neither am I. It's probably of shoddy quality, virtually worthless, and sounds poopty. On top of that, it's cluttering up the picture of your WishIHadARitter. I'll give you $20 for it. Can't see it being worth much more than that.
Just went to take the Gotoh 201 bridge I put on my wish and stripped the screws Once I get them out, I'm gonna start the refin. I'll put the original bridge Wish sent when I'm ready to put it back together.
$20 for a picture of a Wish and Ritter - done! Sorry for the derail - 49sfine - back to refinishing stuff please!
