I've noticed that alot of high end basses have wooden pickup covers, which i suppose is added for visual reasons. My question is, do they affect the tone of the bass? A 1mm thick plate of wood between the pickup and the strings would most likely dampen the magnetic field, and therefore soften the sound or something?

...or am i completely missing the whole idea?

    Thanks,
