What's the woodiest sounding fretless bass you know of? (Looking for a well-made version of a Wishbass, hehe.)
That's an easy one.... Rob Allen's.... about as organic and 'DB like' as you are going to get in an fretless electric bass.
+1 ...doesn't get better. Is that the kind of woody you were talking about. I guess you could also call steve swallow's tone woody, but in a much different way.
Your Rob Allen bass rules - few other basses can come anywhere near it. In the bargain world I live in actually, a Sinsonido has a bit of woodiness to speak of.
Ibanez EDA 900F ? I played one at ed romans music in vegas. It was ALLL wood. not that crapola luthiate garbaje(very woody sounding.(I think it was walnut?)
Believe it or not, fretless Rickenbackers have a wild DB like tone, not quite 700$ though unless you come across some wicked retarded deal.
Manne made in Italia! Check out the Manne web site, Juan at Basses -electric-acoustic has a Manne w Korina body/ash neck, sweet woody sound !!
Stambaugh make a great fretless, worth checking out: http://www.stambaughdesigns.com/singlebasic.html
Rob Allen's and Godin's always come to mind, but the Manne Acousti-Bass really sounds nice and woody, airy and still focused.
i know that a lot of people hate wishbasses, but to be quite honest, i think the wish has the closest DB sound for an electric bass that i have ever played...as far as heard, i'd say the ashbury bass is also very good at sounding DB'ish and i hear the rob allen sounds phenominal, but that is over 700 i believe
