the not so much used woods?
    not neccicarily really exotic ones
    just some fun ones:
    like hophorn
    cherry gum
    purple heart
    bloodwood
    ipe
    movingui
    jatoba/african cherry
    red gum

  2. Purpleheart, Bloodwood, and Jatoba are very popular (if not boutique in their price) tone woods.

Gum, while very attractive to me at least, is known for being unstable WRT temperature and humidity, so you might use it only for a thin top, but not anything structural.

I can get bloodwood jatobah and purpleheart locally - they are pretty easy to find. Jatobah is known as "brazilian cherry". Makore is known as "african cherry" and I have a local source for that as well.

Ipe is very easily available as decking material.

Many of the above woods aer widely available on the web but are not highly touted because they are not (as you have noted) as sought-after and exceptional figure pieces do not pop up as much. These woods are generally available in the rough and listed as dimensional lumber on the web without pictures and "by the board" advertising.

Red gum is more of a west coast wood and is more pervalent out there.

Movingui (african satinwood) and makore I have seen here http://www.westpennhardwoods.com/unique/index.php

Hey FBB, Since I'm in Agawam, what are the chances you could share your local sources? I understand if you don't want to or if there is some TB rule against it or whatever, but I always wondered who around here you could turn to for that sort of thing.

    Thanks In Advance ! ! !
