I shot this cool little video when I stumbled across Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey at the Warwick Booth at Summer NAMM 2008. Jonas Hellborg himself was giving them a tour of the rig, which sounded amazing. Just thought I'd share.
The only disclaimer I would put on this is that regardless of the amp Victor is playing out of... It always sounds like Victor. I've never seen/heard him on anything other than a Fodera which I'm sure has a lot to do with that specific tonality, but I guarantee his hands are the largest contributing factor to his tone.
That is some really good tone. The Hellborg is supposed to be transparent though, right? So it's all the Fodera?
Wow--largesting? Really? I tend to sound the same no matter what amp I'm playing through, too. I wish my 'same' was as good as the 'sames' of Victor and Jonas.
I've always considered that a bit of a fallacy...that "transparent" thing. Everything in the signal chain imparts a tone.
Part II: After Nashville I ran into the same Hellborg backline at the Santa Barbara 311 show. P-Nut was rocking a 100% Hellborg Rig. I happened to have photo passes and I was literally propped up on the stage in front of the monitors, so I could get as close to his stage sound as possible. I have to say, again it sounded super sweet. I wouldn't call it transparent as it seems to have an uncanny way of defining lows/mids/highs without losing a really strong/big bottom end. Again, sorry for the compressed video on a digital camera, but it gives you an idea. Now if I can just save up the money! George Bush didn't even get me close to the preamp with my "economic stimulous" check!
I've heard him on non-fodera basses. Still sounds like Vic. Vic got his sound through millions of hours of practice, not a Fodera, Hellborg, or anything else.
yeah...but have you plugged a couple of basses into a hellborg?? i makes your bass sound more like your bass than anything ive ever heard.
Thanks for sharing that! I'm sure you had a limited amount of recording time and all but it seemed like the video ended right when Vic was starting to go off... No? Just messin'... I'll take it!
Unfortunately, the Hellborg rig has yet to make its way to Florida. But if it's good enough for P-Nut...
true jimmy.... i've plugged all sorts of basses into the rig, 76 jazz, lakland JO skyline, about 10 warwicks, and they seem all to sound like the manufacturers websites say they sound, if you know what i mean. Each bass with it's own character showcased, easy but intelligent EQ, it's a dream. I can't believe there's one in Perth, Western Australia (a very long way from anywhere!) and not one in Florida!
awesome! can't wait to get my hellborg rig! only a couple of weeks whats that right underneath the bottom power amp?
wow...that sounds awesome...i really like the tone from the wooten jam as well as the 311 tune...super sweet
