I have a simple starter bass, an Ibanez GSR200 in trans red. I was thinking of doing some upgrades.
I want all black hardware, bridge, knobs, tuners.
I thought about getting some Seymour Duncan pickups, looks like 2 P-Bass and a J-bass pickup.

Judging by the upgrades, it looks like they will cost more than what I paid for this bass. Probably at least $200 in upgrades alone.

It is worth putting this much money into this bass or should I just buy a better bass?

I think it would make it way more original, but I want it to sound better too...

I believe I saw Ben Kuzay with that bass, and I do tend to believe it was modded. So yeah, if it fits your palm nicely, then go for it, I don't think you're gonna regret it.

He has a blue Ibanez that is quite similar, but not it.

  4. Actually it is 1 p bass pickup, and a jazz pickup. Thats gonna run you around 140 bucks just for those.

Unless your hardware is non functioning, I'd leave it alone. Of course if you just have money burning a hole in your pocket, then by all means help the economy and spend some cash.

Keep all the original parts and if you ever decide to trade it or sell it put it back to original condition before you let it go. It does not matter how much you spend on it, your only going to get a fair, or unfair trade for it as a GSR200.

swap pups, you can use them in any other future bass
and try to fing a direct replacement bridge
tuners are not worth it IMO

I wouldn't, but if it plays well and all, it'd be OK I guess. One thing worth looking into is how standard those components are. I would imagine they are a stock P and J pickup, but the bridges and tuners could be a hassle

As for Kuzay, I do think it's a GSR. The one you posted is a mini bass, no way he's using that.

As for the two p pickups. A precision pickup is also called a split coil, and this means that it is actually split in two parts, one closer to the neck (not always), and another one closer to the bridge. So what you're seeing as two, is actually one pickup. So, yeah, you got a P/J configuration.

  11. While it may not be worth it from a monetary position, I think it is a great idea to modify this bass. Part of the learning process should include knowledge of how a bass is put together. As long as you are doing the work yourself, you will get a wealth of knowledge that you can use on future basses, and it will help you prepare for the inevitable emergency repair. Not only will you know more about basses, but most of the knowledge can be applied to guitars, and for some reason they seem to break at inconvenient times with more frequency.

+1. You should see my starter bass. Its mods have been modded. A Cort P bass. Different pickups and circuits from time to time. Repainted. Scalloped neck. Kahler tremolo. Occasionally its had a fretless neck. I learned a lot be basically ruining that bass.

I knew the PBass was split coil, but I never put that into consideration, fact of being up way too late for way too long I was pretty tired.
I think im going to do it though. It will take awhile before all the upgrades I want will be done, but it will be worth it in the final result.
