Would 330 Watts at 4 Ohms....

I currently have a 500 watt at 4 Ohms amp.... running at 8 ohms currently.....

I was looking into getting a head that is only 330 at 4... so about 220ish at 8 ohms.

Will there be a noticable volume difference?

My current head is all solid-state... the head I'm looking into has a tube pre-amp and solid state power.

I mainly play G&Ls and use an Ernie Ball 2x12 cabinet.

    Thank you

Why would you want less power?

The volume difference won't be too huge, but you'll want to have that headroom back.

I'll second what JMX just said - you'll miss that headroom!

If you want to get the most out of your cab, then you want to run an amp capable of up to double the cab's power handling. Being able to turn the amp up that one extra notch without activating the amp's clip light is more than worthwhile! Don't get me wrong - 300 watts is still pretty loud (especially 300 tube driven watts) - but your EB 2x12 is going to fart and whine for so much more than that!
