Would a Mesa Big Block 750 pumping 550 watts at 4 ohms + Mesa PH 4X10 and 2x12 cab be way too powerful/loud in a rehearsal settting?

Drummer, guitar half stack tube 100 watts, vocals with PA

Would it sound ok? Or would it be so powerful that I would have to keep the volume so low on that head that it would sound crappy?

  2. Im a way this is a bit of a vague question because A. We do not know the size of room, and B how loud the musicians are and what type of music your'e playing.

I don't see why it would'nt work, but why would u want to lug all that practice?? Couldn't you just take one cab??

    That will be the room.
"Couldn't you just take one cab??" wELL, the rehearsal room is my home... so... they would both have to stay.

We play hard rock, prog rock, metal stuff. Think Tool and Alter Bridge.
We have a pretty loud drummer.

    now you edit my quote;)

  6. Then in that case if you're too loud just disconnect one of the cabs. A 4x10 or 2x12 on it's own would suffice for 90% of gig situations, you'd only need one to practice.

I haven't bought the 2x12 yet and this rig that I just mentioned will not leave this room. It will not be used for gigging.

Mesa Big Block is pumping only 280 watts into the 8 ohm 4x10.

I used to rehearse with this in a 20x20 basement:

    PLX-3402 (stereo) - 2200 watts
    PLX-2402 (bridged) - 2400 watts

    Total wattage = 4600

  12. I can't believe this hasn't been suggested.

If you think you're too loud, most amps have at least one knob dedicated to volume control. You don't actually have to disconnect a cab to use the knob either. It's really cool. More musicians in general should try using the volume knob.

Yeah, the volume knob is a necessary evil.

No, just three loud guitars and a crazy drummer. That whole rig is now gone and has been replaced with a slightly more portable Crest CA9/Schroeder 210212L.

What's the purpose of your rehearsing?

If it's to nail down parts, harmony's, breaks, punches and getting tight, really challenge yourselves and do it quietly. The mistakes will come flying through in colour. You'll hear them loud and clear.

I never understood the need for volume at a rehearsal.

I did have to run that thing off of two independent circuits. It was silly. Fun, but silly.
