Writing music/songs

Discussion in 'Miscellaneous [BG]' started by PUNK&DONUTS, Feb 1, 2001.

  1. When writing music and songs do you have a sort of procedure or is just a spur of the moment thing. For instance when I write songs it usually happens when I listen to music and it gives me inspiration eg good melody solid bass line. Also when you have written a piece are you ever fully happy with it or do you continue to try and make it better because for myself I can never seem to be happy with the way it sounds or just be content with it the way it is. I think most of this is because our music is primarily developed from jamming and not someone coming up with a riff before we jam so our songs are sometimes limmitless and if we didn't stop would go for ever on just impro grooves alone (This sometimes pisses the singer off). Sorry this is a bit long I'll stop thanks for your ideas.

  2. My song writing is slave to the inspiration bug.I never know when it hits me.Sometimes I try to listen to music that I consider to be inspirational. When I was in a band my guitarist would come up with a riff or a whole song and we'd get together and try to come up with the rest of the song. There would be times when we're concentrating on a particular song and another song might come out of that.
Lately I've been suffering from writer's block and can't seem to get out of it.Everyone goes through that, but it's no fun.As far as being happy with something you wrote...everyone is their own worst critic. This has advantages and disadvantages.Self criticism is great for honing your craft.Too much of it can discourage good ideas. There must be a balance(especially with the jamming thing or else you'll never finish a potential song.)I hope I've been helpful.

  3. This is one my bands problems although good it often distracts us from completing the song because we will go off and play that instead I suppose we should be a bit more disciplined but it is so hard when it's such a good riff! Hey even sometimes we put it together. As for the being my worst critic thing thats so true I pick and pick and when it comes to lyrics I'm even worse although lately I've been a little less critical of myself which is good because this last week we have written 4 songs the 4th almost done. Also hope you get rid of your writers block, You should try doing something different like listening to different music or playing unusual scales that often sporns new ideas for me but I suppose what works for some and doesn't work for others.

  4. almost every song i write happens at about 2 in the morning
i just get a line in my head and build on that
