    Automated um... program type thingies that 'crawl' around the web and gather information for search engines and stuff.

    Actually, the last Roger Zelazny book I read (author of the Chronicles of Amber series) dealt with this subject. :) Although the internet in the book was a bit more advanced and was more of an alternate reality that you jacked into like William Gibson's version of cyberspace. If you've ever seen Johnny Mnemonic or read Neuromancer then you can conceptualize Gibson's version of cyberspace.
