I'm thinking of taking the leap to six. I'll play what I can find before buying but what have you found to your liking? Notice I didn't ask which one is best.
Peavey Cirrus 6!!! Embellisher, you here?? He can testify to this one. Seriously, in my opinion, the Peavey Cirrus basses are some of the best around. Try one.
What Brad & Ryan said, PLUS.... A used Ken Smith BSR-M, BSR-P, or (longshot) BSR-CR A used Warwick Thumb Bolt-On, A used Alembic Europa, A used Alembic Rogue I am seriously diggin' my Hanewinckel 6, which I got used for about the type of money you're talkin', but the odds of finding one are pretty freakin' slim. Peace, James
i played some pedullas the other day, and they are pretty cool, not fender cool, but cool. There was a fiver for about $1400 used, they also had a 4-stringer for $650, but the bridge p/u was dead.
I've had two and loved em both, the Modulus Q6, which i now own and has been my drea bass for the last 5-6 years and my old Yamaha TRB 6P(neck through) that was a 95 model i think. Both great and also agree about the used thingy too.
Used would be great, but I just don't see a lot of used 6 stringers around. And I definitely want to play the bass before I buy it.
I (heart) the Cirrus 6. I'd also advise you to try out a Warwick Corvette Proline 6 (the Standard 6 is too boomy, IMO).
Cirrus! Go for it! Used 6's are hard to come by, but a used Ken Smith, Pedulla Thunderbolt, Elrick, Hanewinckel, Yamaha TRB6P, etc would be great. The only other new 6 under $1500 that I would even consider is the Carvin LB76, but from the Carvins that I've played, I would pick the Cirrus over them.
What are you still doing here? Why aren't you gone to try one out? Attached is a pic of one just like my Cirrus Custom 6.
