what's your favorite bass body wood? i'm a huge fan of swamp ash. seems like the perfect combination of alder, mahogany, and maple tones.

as far as laminate tops. i love birdseye maple, more than most. that and cocobolo.

Hm i really like ash and swamp ash bodies, and i like redwood tops, especially all the fancy water treated..flamed etc ones. Cocobolo , depending on the piece , attracts me as well.

Ash, with a Macassar ebony, wenge or one of the F bass enhanced ash tops.

I've never played an alder bodied bass I really like and most figured maples leave me cold.
  4. A nice mid-weight Honduran-Mahogany body cut in the shape of a non-reverse thunderbird. Maybe a Mahogany top. hahaha.

IF I had to do a different top wood, I'd say ash.

I'm a sucker for a nice piece of flame walnut. I like my Swamp Ash, & I like my Korina, & I think flame walnut would look great dropped onto either...

    Just a quick question:

has any1 ever heard/seen a bass using black walnut as the main/top wood?

I've been considering making 1 & was wondering how it would sound/look.

My favorite body wood is mahogany (love the full/tight low mids). As for a top wood, I have no real preference. Lots of different woods look good, but certainly the water-cured "blackened" redwood from Mike Tobias is up there on my list of favorites, as are flamed redwood and "fiddleback" mahogany (see my latest Skjold). I'm not as familiar with myrtle, but I have seen a number of basses and tops of late made of various types of myrtle which have really grabbed my attention.

Spalted Maple is the king of all topwoods imo. Flame Koa and Cocobolo are pretty nice too.

    Body: alder

    Top: paint!

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy looking at top lams of exotic wood, but in some respects I'm old school. That said, if my Darrin Huff bass ever gets built, the top will be spalted/quilted maple. I'm very much looking forward to it. :)

for the body I like a mix of mahogany and swamp ash, like ken lawrence do on his unity line.

For the top, my favorite for the last few years has been cocobolo.

I think I recall an Alembic with that top wood. Nice looking but a little pricey on an Alembic!
