my first bass was a MIM Fender Jazz .....12 years later I'm still playing a Fender Jazz (US 62 RI). I gave the MIM Jazz to a friend, so I still get to see it and play it now and then.

Your first bass vs. what you play now

I started of with brand new MIM Fender P-bass that went with me from the first lesson on hand placement right up to being on stage with my band. 9 years later I still have it(along with 4 more various basses) and am looking for another P-bass for my collection.
Epiphone EB-0(wish i still had it to make it a frankenbass)> Peavey BXP grind 5(with jazz pickups and a preamp, i believe it was a custom, idk i bought it used, and then sold it due to rough times.)> a squire precision.(which i hate, but its all i could afford.)
Started out with a 91' Peavey Fury bought brand new. Now switching between an Am Standard Jazz, an EBMM Sterling and a Euro Spector depending on the mood. The Fury is still at my mom's house and whenever I visit I pick it up and play it. Still amazed at the pencil neck on that Fury, and the great unplugged sound.
My first bass was an Aria IGB40. Spoiled me with low action. Now I can't stand playing a bass that doesn't have super low action.
I bought my first bass 34 years ago; it was a '72 Fender Precision and I wish I still had it. Someone had spray painted it silver; I got it for a song and refinished it with a natural finish. The wood grain wasn't too great but it played like a dream (at least that's how I remember it

First bass was a mid 60's EB-3 with finish striped off the body.
Neck had original sticky finish.
Dull unfocused sound on all settings. Never satisfied with it's sound.
Neck heavy -- prototype of the neck dive.
I found a fretless Pbass that sounded great and sold the Gibson to my youngest sisters boyfriend. A REALLY nice guy.
My exact time frame now becomes a bit loose.
She broke off with him a few months later.
He took to bass quickly, was in a couple of bands for about a year.
His house was broken into, he was killed and all the belongings of any worth were taken.
All around rather sad first bass.
I have the fretless Pbass, which was my main for about 30years but have not settled on a primary over the last 4 years.

Yep, in that my first bass was a POS Fender Power Jazz Special and that made me motivated to get good basses. I hated almost everything about the bass, color, sound, playability (stunk!) weight...but at least it got me started (for a month!).

My first bass is still my #1; it's an Ibanez BTB 600, which I gutted and rewired passive, with J-bass pickups by Pete Biltoft.
I don't play it every day, as I have other basses I play, too. But it's definitely my "go to" bass, and the one I'd choose if I could have only one. It's sonically very versatile, and plays like a dream.

My first bass was an Ibanez RoadstarII (I think) back around 1990 and now I play a Sadowsky UV70. A big part of me wishes I had kept that bass since it was my first, but hey, I am not married to my real "first"

First bass was a brand new MM Stingray 4 banger, which I got rid of about 6 months later because I hated the neck profile, weight and string to string volume discrepancies. I moved into a Sterling 4 and loved it lots but started figuring out that the tone I was looking for just wouldn't come from an active bass - every tone I liked came from passives. I've been a P bass junkie ever since and my most recent purchase is a '62 AV P. Can't wait for it to arrive.

The Jazz still sounds good though, less versatile and only has 4 strings^^

My first was a MIM Fender Precision, owned a couple of American Fender Jazz's, and Aerodyne Jazz, a Duff McKagen P/J, and now I have two Lakland Darryl Jones' that are just fine.
ahhh my first was a 80's Bc Rich warlock Platnium Series
