9 years ago I bought a body and neck from Zolla Guitars in San Diego. Pleased with the purchase as I was I saved enough to purchase 3 more bodies and 3 more necks. In order to save a few bucks I obtained a merchantile license to get an A discount. I was told that after I give him a deposit he would get to work. Well he lied about the continuance of any work and strung me along for nearly a year. First it was a wildfire and he needed to evacuate, then he had to change buildings. It was one excuse after another. Finally he shipped me pieces that were scuffed, had scratches in the finish and even though his site advertises a 9/16" hole for mounting tuners the necks he sent me were barely 13mm. I sent everything back which cost me plenty to overnight and that #@%&[email protected]@5^ hasn't refunded my money yet. If you live in the San Diego area or see his ads published in periodicals don't give this drunken lush a chance. I thought I'd post this as a warning
I was wondering if you could clarify a couple of things. The initial purchase was nine years ago; but how long was it between the time you sent the deposit, and the time you received the faulty goods? There have been several wildfires and evacuations in California in recent years, are you sure it was just an excuse? And why did you send everything back by expensive overnight? Surely you could have photo documented what you received, sent him copies of the pics by email, and then returned the goods by UPS Ground or Parcel Post? I'm not trying to shift the blame to you at all, just trying to get a clearer picture of what went wrong.
what happened is this. I buy parts from another vender in that area. Electronic circuit boards to be exact and in conversation I asked if he knew Zolla. I was told that he wasn't an individual to be trusted at all. I was told that yes there was a wildfire but it didn't affect his business to the point it needed closing, not a near burn out as I was told by Zolla. The second attempt at a purchase was 6 years ago. I had got my license and I even sent him an ABM bridge to see if extra routing was needed to install it and get the lowest possible action. The bridge "disappeared" from his shop. I wasn't compensated for that either. I was so P O'd from his mishandling and frankly just pissing on me that I overnighted (DHL) everything back to him and asked for a full refund. When the necks don't fit in the neck pockets there's just no excuse. Not being a violent person per se if I could drive up to his shop it would've been with a Louisville Slugger. He told me to get a drill and open up the tuner holes when you can see on his website that "all his (sic) basses necks are drilled with a 9/16 opening". So I'm out 2.5k and I will alert people to this fraud whenever possible.
The "ancient wound that cannot be let go" section. Maybe it should go in the Northern Ireland subforum?
