Well, every now and again, I try to bring myself to sell something in order to make room for more gear. Thinning the herd, and all that stuff. ;) The problem is, I normally only buy stuff that I like (and yes, I tend to like a lot of things!). While I do very much like the looks, tone, playability and features of this Zon, I have found that the string spacing (17.5mm, I believe) is a bit tight for my meat-stick fingers. :meh:

This bass is not getting the play time that it deserves, and so I am going to have to post it up for grabs. Several folks have PM'd me in the past about this bass, and if they are still interested, they get dibs (in the order in which they presented their original 'nibbles'). I acquired this bass from Vic Serbe, who had Joe Zon make a number of upgrades, including a new new neck, new bridge, and swap to SD narrow-aperature humbuckers. You can read more about this in Vic's thread, here.

    zons5b.

I would like to get $2,300, shipped within the lower 48.

    Thanks, Tom.

  2. I think I recall myself being one of the "nibblers".

Too bad I'm about to splurge on an upright...:bawl:

Well, free bump for an awesome bass!

  8. I tried a Sonus Special 5 string at the Bass Emporium in Austin and was smitten but need a fretted before I get a fretless. Is the string spacing the same as on yours? And would the tone be comparible?

  9. Well, I just bought the upright, and this is still tempting...however, a bit to steep for me right now!

To be honest, I am not sure, as Joe appears to use a couple of different string spacings, and this is a somewhat unique instrument, what with the upgrades and whatnot.

Perhaps Vic might have a better idea of how it would sound compared to a Sonus Special.

The string spacing is identical, and the sound is different. It's been a while, but I did own a Sonus Special fretless at the same time I owned this bass, and they are a bit different. I would say this bass sounds much bigger and meatier than the Special. IMHO the Special has a pretty strong midrange peak, which is why it's so great for fretless, but this bass is just generally (again) bigger sounding. It's got both a fatter bridge and neck pickup... both tonally and physically.

I finally found some time to take a few more pics last night. This was a 'quick and dirty' photo shoot, as I didn't have much time, so I apologize for the mediocre photography.

    I did find a few dings/scratches, though. :(

This was about as bad as I could get them to come out. They are not noticeable from 12" or so out.

And it looks like the finish has popped a bit around the neck bolts. I had not noticed that before, and in some lighting, you can barely see it. But in the spirit of full disclosure, this is how they look at their worst.

This bass does come with the Zon gig bag.

*sigh* there's just no easy way to capture the depth of that top in pics, and goodness knows I tried as well. It's among the very prettiest quilts I've ever seen.
