I have only seen and played one, a Deep Jazz 6, about a year ago. I met a guy from Canada through a friend and he brought the bass to a gig and let me use it for a set.

Amazing quality, the bass played effortlessly, He had the action set very low, and as best as I could tell from a one set try-out, there was no buzzing or other stuff going on. The gig was a fairly lame dinner/jazz thing, so I really never gave it a decent workout to voice any opinions about the electronics.

It seemed extremely cool, but at ~$4K (IIRC), I'd love to give it a little longer trial run ....

 

Not a fan of the body shapes...

But having never heard nor played on more comments would be interesting.

 

Dave Segal (the man behind NYBW) is probably one of the best kept secrets in the bass world.

He is the most meticulous guy that I've ever met when it comes to bass construction and set-up. He understands every aspect of why those vintage Jazz basses work and he brings those elements across in his instruments.

He also does the best set-up work I've ever seen - at any price. I won't risk a CUP violation by waxing poetic about Dave Segal but if I were having my Fodera Presentation re-fretted he would without a doubt be the guy doing it. He's also the guy behind our GS5's - for all of the reasons above.

Give him a buzz if you can - he's a true class act and very interesting to talk with.

 

That's really nice. David has a great reputation. I'll check back perioically to see when the review has been posted.

 

David Segal is a fine person and an amazing artist/craftsman in the building of fine bass guitars.

Good to see you're still loving those basses - not that I'm at all surprised!

You are a great example of why I consider Dave to be one of the high-end bass industry's best kept secrets. I remember that you took a bit of a leap of faith with purchasing the first one - and then almost immediately called us back and ordered a second one!

Dave is THE jazz bass guy.

Yes, that is exactly how it happened. Leap of faith on the fretless Concert, then ordered the fretted Deep Jazz. The only way I could be happier is if I had MORE NYBW basses though these two really cover it.

Are they passive only?

The sunburst and Walnut ones shown here are completely passive. Dave will do them with an active circuit as well. Lately he has been using an Aguilar OB3. Once we get the Groove Shoppe/Glockenklang pre-amp modded for other cavity layouts I believe he will be offering that as an option for an additional fee.

What a trip... on the fretless' bridge pickup, are the outer strings' polepieces single? If so, any insight as to why?

 

Dang, you guys are curious about my basses! You are correct. The bridge position C-string pole piece is the same size as the ones in dual pole piece config. The B-string, however, is a larger pole piece than the others. My fretted Deep Jazz is all dual pole pieces and is amazingly balanced and evenly punchy all across. But the single pole pieces on the fretless are directly under the strings to help make sure the outside strings are as hot. The balance and punchiness are amazing so I'm just going to say both basses work. I also generally play with both pups full on (single-coils) so the pups interact.

As for the passive question, I have always been an active guy. But the tone here is undeniable and I don't have to worry about dying batteries. I MIGHT add one in the future for flexibility in real time but for now I just adjust at my Read Bass Purity rack preamp and I am very happy.
