Hi all, Not a member of this club, but wanted to let you know that this thread inspired me to go out and find a Danelectro to play (harder than it sounds, at least in Goleta/Santa Barbara). I turned up a used, pretty battered copperburst longhorn and, well, it was insanely fun to play. Putting everything else aside -- the cartoonish looks (which I dig), the beat-up body, the relatively low price -- it was just big, big fun. Such an easy neck! And I say that as someone who's used to a short-scale Gretsch neck. I absolutely understand why you guys/girls are hooked on these things. Now to start educating myself on Danelectros...
I have Chrome flats on two basses (Jerry Jones Longhorn and Dano 56), and they're great. I have Rotosound 77s on my Dano Longhorn, and they also sound great. I had them on the JJ Longhorn originally and I didn't like them on that one. They were dull on the JJ. But on the Dano they aren't dull. They "bark" in a good way. Sometimes it depends on the instrument.
I've never used flats on my Danos, but FWIW... I had a Fender Mustang a few years back. I had Chromes on it for a while and they worked well on the short scale. I also had a J Bass with Chromes on it several years ago and they were great on a 34" scale too.
Found this Rumor in a pawn shop today - never seen one in person before. For $99 (it's in perfect shape), how could I go wrong? It's a hoot to play.
That is definitely the going rate for them - which is why I don't have one despite my intense desire for one. In the Danelectro line the clear "classic" is the longhorn and late 90s ones still regularly go for 300-450 and the guitars go for considerably less. For some reason (not the least being it is more understandable to most bass players (long scale, natural neck, adjustable bridge on most examples) the demand is for this one - and since they haven't re-released it (as they regularly do the longhorn) the demand has driven up the price. They are, as instruments go, absolutely WORTH $650 - you won't find a better instrument for that, especially if uniqueness and cool factor are part of your equation for "good" I just don't like paying that much for anything (I'm both poor and cheap) but if I was starting new (ie didn't have several higher end basses) but knew what I know now, I would totally swing for one of these (though my primary goal is still to re-acquire my longhorn).
Welcome to the world of Danelectro, wait till you discover lipstick tubes and Masonite - then you'll really be hooked.
Thanks - I had an Aqua '63 RI a few years back. I really liked it, but sold it to a local guy in a rockabilly band who wanted it badly. Glad to be a Dano owner again...I'll get another '63 RI someday.
Welcome ack! Ironically, I have a Rumor and a 63 SS RI. In fact, you can see both of them in my avatar. Do you need a number? We'd love to have another member.

I believe you have to take the neck off the body. I thought there was an adjustment bolt in the neck pocket.
Yup - should be an adjustment nut/screw at the end of the neck, just like a Fender. The ones on my DC Pros are a big X-headed thingy, but not for a Phillips screwdriver. A big one with a flat point works just fine. Enjoy, my friend, and welcome!
Noticed the Longhorn bass is still included on the Dano website , nice to think they're still pumping them out .
They're also doing 56 basses, which is cool. (Not that I need another.) (But when are they going to do short scale DC basses again?)
