Yes, loop that cable, always! It's like a seatbelt for your guitar jack.

As for the wireless, if your playing huge venues then definately get one. If your playing theater size and less, forget the wireless and add to your bass arsenal. Wireless units have their place, but it is one more thing to go wrong in the signal chain (and often is the FIRST to go wrong), and you can always pick one up later for a lot less than the bass will probably run you!

Listen mate, i voted for the bass. you don't need to get a wireless system just so you can practice in your bedroom without stepping on the cables. i would actually recommend that you get yourself a seriously long cable so it can just hang down infront of your amp and you will absolutely never rip it out of its socket because of the slack.

Like other TB'ers have already said; for a huge arena then maybe get a wireless system, but fir anything smaller; cables are a tried and tested method of delivery that has worked since the electric instrument was invented.

Edit: i just understood that you were ripping the cable out of the bass. like everyone else said, just loop the cable around the strap.

 

Sounds to me like you need the bass more than the wireless. Especially if it's not going to be comfortable on stage or have the sound you want. When you loop the cable through your strap as others suggested it shouldn't be a problem.

I think I might have used my wireless twice since I bought it almost a year ago. Now it lives in my closet.

 

Get the jazz now, wireless never. Unless you're willing to spend big bucks for a top-of-the-line unit (like the long lamented X-Wire) it'll suck your tone faster than a Boss pedal.

A secondary/backup bass, or one simply for a different sound is many times more useful than a wireless. Especially if you're planning to go on tour. Strings can break, stuff can happen, and at that moment seeing your backup ready to get plugged in around the strap will make you sure you made the right decision.

 

Yes, another bass is the way to go. How many times have I seen a show come to a grinding halt when someone's wireless unit craps out? Ever seen Spinal Tap?

Fender Standard basses are alright, but you can definitely get one that sounds terrible. If there is more than one available in the store, play them all to see which one feels/sounds the best. I would also recommend immediately replacing the stock pickups, which are entirely too hot and don't sound that great. Scarred2112 is exactly right in his assertion that you can never have too much backup gear on tour. Everything will break, eventually. It's the difference between you scrambling around like a maniac trying to borrow someone's bass when yours dies, or simply reaching for another one (with which you're already familiar, by the way) and continuing with the show.

I've used wireless for years for rehersing in small spaces, just walking around I got tangled on everyone's cord. Believe me, they're more trouble than they're worth and suck more tone than you'd believe (at least the cheap ones) and frankly, people've been getting away without wireless systems for thousands of years (maybe 75 or so in the electric world) so don't think a good cord wrapped around the strap won't do it for you.

 

Get the bass. A standard fender p is a great instrument to add to your rack,and I can tell you from experience that dropping a semour duncan quarter pounder in it is definately 60 bucks well spent. Basses do not do well with cheap wirelesses and as a former GC employee, I can tell you that if you must have a wireless for your bass the slx is not a bad choice, but you would be much better off with a sennheiser system. They don't cost much more, and they are super sturdy and reliable.

As for the bass, in the price range, a used Made in Japan reissue
P (either 57 or 62 reissue) is great. I think they are better basses than the average MIM for a little more money.

 

I HATE batteries.
