My personal preference goes towards "Black". I've said it before, and I'll say it again, it's like what they say in the Fashion Industry…"Black is always chic and it goes with anything." To wit…
I have a 2018 MIM Fender Precision with a 3-Tone Sunburst body, Pau Ferro fingerboard, and a white pick guard. I have been contemplating the thought of putting on a tort PG. But I kind of like how the fret markers match the pick guard. One my my favorite bass players was Calvin "Fuzz" Jones, who was Muddy Water's bass player. Calvin had a white PG on his sunburst P bass, so I guess it can't be that bad. Plus my bass does not look like everyone else's bass...and I do not mean just because mine is left handed.
I really like pearl, that's what I plan to do to mine, but custom fit for a P elite is expensive... even though Fender put them on their other elites, the won't sell me one. The cream while that came on this sunburst looks nice though. I'd keep the black before red tort or gold.
(That's my favorite look for a burst: cream or mint. Shh, don't tell anybody though, I don't want it to become a TB cliché like tort!)
ahh yes the p/g dilemma.... i could never choose, so i swap them out periodically orange pearloid opaque blk- tort
My '78 P-Bass came with a black one; but, it was cracked, so I took it off, and safely stored it away. It looked kinda... gloomy, anyhow. This cream/black/cream Fender replacement looks much better - and classier - IMO. So much so, in fact, that when I built my Warmoth Mini-P? I put one on that little beauty, too...
Tough call. Any of those would look fine, but if tort, it would look best as 60's speckled yellow/red, IMO.
Once it gets warmer I'm going get my new tools out and make etched aluminum pickguards.. I'm making a geezer butler.. Black striped pickguard..
Tort if you can get a good one, but many of the cheapie tort guards just look like awful colour photocopies of salami. Anodised gold is great. Mine is a PJ with a switch and I haven't been able to find anyone to cut the slot in an anodised guard, so it has a black Tony Franklin guard ranklin guard on it
I love tort on white/cream basses, but it doesn't look right on sunburst to me. I know it's a classic combo, but I prefer black.
