The Story:
In March 2008, I had Brian Barrett at the lowend.net contact Bill to have him build this bass for me. It's based off of a '68 Jazz bass but with 21 frets instead of 20. This bass is also pictured on Brian's website under the sold basses section titled: "NASH 68 J Blocks." The custom neck with blocks and binding was an additional $400. The total cost was $2200 (2008 prices). Bill did an amazing job on this bass; it feels so robust and well-built and once you plug it in, it's FAT Vintage Tone! It packs a punch and is very versatile as most J basses are. This bass was a custom order and the wait time was over two months...well worth the wait!!

The Tone:
Clarity is the first word that comes to mind. Notes ring out so loud and clear, it's just great. This bass cuts! The body is Alder and resonates for days. The nitrocellulose finish is thin and you can smell it!
Acoustically, the bass is loud and snappy with a nice feeling fretboard that has great projection. The back of the maple neck is smooth, fast and really easy to move around on as all Nash necks are.
Plugged in, it's Fat, Vintage Jazz Bass tone...as mellow or growly as you want but make no mistake, this bass will cut like a knife at full volume or with the bridge pup soloed. You will be heard!
The tone knob really allows you to capture that vintage round tone. Roll off just a bit and there you are...old school rock n roll.
The Lollar pups are not humcanceling, but they make very minimal noise depending on your amp, pedal, cable situation.
The Jason Lollar Pickups are perfect in this bass; they capture that old school vibe really well.
The tuners are excellent. You have to TRY to knock this thing out of tune...but I would expect nothing less from a quality bass like this.
It's in the upper 9 lbs. range and it looks BADDASS! Not much else to say...IT'S A JAZZ BASS, ALBEIT, A VERY GOOD ONE.

The Specs:
Relicing: Level 1 "Light" Relcing
Body: Alder
Finish: 3-Tone Sunburst with Nitrocellulose lacquer
Neck: Maple RC B/B wide radus - not yer average J neck radius!
Fret board: Rosewood with Blocks and Binding
Tuners: Vintage Reverse Style
Pickups: Jason Lollar
Frets: 21
Hang tag included.

* Just a little side note: I finally had a chance to play a Fender Custom Shop '64 Jazz (the bass I thought I wanted once this one sold)...not anymore. Why? Because, while it was an excellent bass, it was not any better than this Nash or my last Nash for that matter. I gotta admit, I was bummed out because I was hoping that the Fender CS Jazz was going to Wow me more than this bass does. Nope. That was last Thursday, 9/10/09. Since then, I'm thinking Alleva Coppolo will be my next Jazz bass. I wan an active JAzz bass. I've already owned Sadowsky and this bass is on par with that (build quality, fit/finish, etc.), so I guess AC is better? I sure hope so. Don't take that as a slam on Fender, I love Fender and still use my MIA as my main bass, but my experience last week was eye opening. It's all about the details. This Nash is a bad dude.

Thanks for looking!

Um, usually the width at the nut on JB's is 1 1/2" so I am surprised that it's less than that. Thickness I mean the measurement from the bottom of the C shape to the top of the fretboard (usually ~ 0.780”)

Sorry, my measurements are not exact...kinda just eyeballin it. All I can tell you is that the neck is slightly wider than that of my Fender J. It's a C neck and feels great but it's beefy almost like P. I'll see if I can find my tape measure.

I'm sure it's 1-1/2" at the nut.... like every other jazz neck.
And the radius is probably 10" like most allparts, and USCG style necks.

Sure is pretty.......

Thanks. Yeah, you're probably correct on the numbers there.

It's your standard C neck. Like I said, it's a tad wider than my Fender J...a different neck all together but really friken nice!

The fret board taper is thin (as all Js are) but the radius is a little beefier and it certainly adds to the tone. All in all, it makes my MIA Fender with Duncan Hot Stacks sound quiet and thin. But the Fender, by itself, is a beast too. I just don't do a side by side between my MIA Fender and this Nash anymore because the Nash always wins.

Anyhow, the neck radius is no different than the 5 other Nash Jazz basses I have picked up at the Mesa Boogie store in Hollywood over the last 1.5 years. So, maybe this radius is Bill's standard, go to neck. ?? I'm not much of a tech/specs guy...if you haven't figured that out already. My only requests to Brian Barrett were the asthetics (finish, blocks and binding), 21 fret board and pickups. The body and neck size/choice, I left up to Bill to make accurate. I still have the email chain between Bill, Brian and Me but I don't think that's neccessary to dig up. If you have more questions, feel free to PM me.
