KSCoffeman joined Talkbass Dec 1 2024. On Dec 4th, 2024 he then purchased an immaculate Sadowsky Japan MV4 from pb9717
Upon receiving the bass KS Coffeman sent this message to the seller pb9717:

"Dude, opened the shipment just now and this guitar smells like its lived its life in a smoke shop. Really strong odor. Not being a smoker, this could be a problem."

“OK, you’ve put us in an interesting position. I’ll give you a chance to make things right. It’s unfortunate because this is a really nice playing bass; I just can’t stand to be in the same room with it. I’m going to be pretty straight-forward on the options here. Option 1 is you refund and send me a shipping label to get it back to you. If over the next day, I think its possible for this bass to smell normal again, I’ll offer Option 2, a $350 refund to cover the fact that I’ll be throwing away the gig bag and replacing it, re-stringing and deeply cleaning the bass. I’m good either way and will consider the matter resolved enough to leave a positive feedback”
I was somewhat taken aback by the tone of the message, but did offer advice on how to alleviate the odor, which was not present before shipping, that the buyer was referencing. The instrument, case, and packaging were not near any smoking area during its tenure with me. I have never had a buyer complain of any odor present on any instrument I've sold. I can only attribute any odor to parties that were involved in transport. The buyer made no effort to pay any partial portion of a return cost, and felt a $350 refund was commensurate with the methods needed to alleviate the "odor" .
I replied that other then following my recommendations to rid said odor, that I would offer no other recourse.

"Plain and simple, You will get the review that is deserved based on the facts of what I received. Every person on my end agrees that they are smelling a bass from a smoking location. My band mates are already naming it “funky bass.”. You have made your position clear, as have I."
The threat of a bad review was present in all messages received by the buyer, who'd been a member for less than 5 days.
I've been a talkbass member for 19 years and have never received a negative feedback before this transaction.
It is unfortunate that an agreement could not be reached. I do recommend sellers provide a written return policy for future transactions.
I have little patience for dishonesty, and then an unwillingness to make things right. I stand by my feedback given. This is the only negative feedback I’ve ever given anybody on here or Reverb, so this picture you’re trying to paint here in your retaliation feedback is interesting. The smoky Sadowsky gig bag you sent me ended up in the garbage and the bass took some work to remove the odor. For the record, I paid in full, and on time and made known the issues immediately upon receiving. You chose to offer nothing but advice on how to clean and remove odors.
Requesting a $350 partial refund for an odor, or negative feedback will be given borders on blackmail. You threw away a gig bag that likely would have been fine after 1 machine washing. I paint no picture.i simply published the message you sent. I also remain certain that the odor you experienced was not present when the bass was shipped. I’ve experienced receiving instruments from cigar smoking UPS drivers, where the smell permeated the packaging. I did not contact the sellers asking for hundreds of dollars in refunds. You also felt it appropriate that I pay the entirety of the return costs, and refund all your money. You made no offer to share the cost of the return. You simply felt that I should incur all the losses associated with this transaction. I am not a retailer. I’m an individual. I do not offer “Try and buy”. All my instruments are sold without a return policy. I am truly sorry you got a bass with an odor but that does not mean there was malice or deception on my part.
