Double Bass What is this that was in my bass?

I noticed the sound of something small inside my 3 month old Shen today. I used a dowel with a gob of tape on the end and found this:

The shavings I'm assuming were from some part of the setup or even manufacture, but what is the little square piece? Might be pine or spruce maybe? I'm afraid it might be something important, like the shim that holds the whole thing together or something

The chunk and the shavings are both spruce. I'm fitting a bass bar in an old Czech instrument and have a bunch of both in the belly of my shop-vac.

The inside of my Shen is splattered with dried hide glue, and it's holding together. Don't worry about it.

My first thought was that it could have been a rough cleat that was reinforcing something or other. Given that the bass is really new, that Shens have a reputation for being well-made, and that they left those shavings in as well, I'd say it's just a scrap.

Yeah, I figured it wasn't the bass equivalent of the flux-capacitor...

Wood shavings? Clearly, a hamster lives in your bass. Put 'em back, before he gets angry!

Your bass made baby's... make sure you don't seperate it from their mother otherwise they could grow up to be CCB's

Too late. I got one already. And I've already shaved its neck down in nut width (not neck thickness) from 2 inches to 1 3/4 inches, so I've already planted the seeds for a bunch more CCB's.
