Am I out of line or a jerk?

Hello all in T.B. land. Over that last few years I have purchased basses on line,,some have been good experiences some have not. Here in Canada you can purchase a Dillon "Ric: copy from VSN guitars in Toronto Ontario. At this moment they are on sale for what I think is a decent price. I E mailed the seller (Contact page at VSN site) and asked 3 questions about their "Ric 'Copy bass...1- nut width 2- neck radius 3- warranty. The seller responded quickly and replied that he could not answer question # 1 or #2. Now VSN has been selling Dillion guitars for quite some time and I was suprised that the seller did not know these answers. I explained that with smallish hands I need to know this info since I can not try one of their basses in person and I did say that I was suprised that the seller could not answer my questions even though he had been selling these basses for quite some time and with out more info I could not commit to buying one.
The sellers replay that I was the only person ever to ask such questions about a bass guitar and no one has ever had a problems with them.


My question is ..do you guys think I was out of line asking tech questions about the bass he was selling and stating that I was suprised that he did not know the answers..was I a jerk ?

Brutal truth is some sellers are lazy. If you want to sell something than don't be an Arse about giving up any/all information that is requested.

Meh, I'm not sure I would necessarily expect a vendor to know that degree of detail about a bass. I also don't think you are a jerk for asking. Does the manufacturer's website have these details? If they don't, I certainly wouldn't expect a seller to know them.

I guess you could ask the seller to measure the nut. That shouldn't be too hard. Neck radius might be a stretch.

All that said, if it's a true "Ric" copy, I'll tell you now that Rics have pretty thick and wide necks to begin with. It's a common complaint about them. Even so, I have relatively small hands as well, and I don't mind the neck. But if you want a Jazz style neck, you might be disappointed.

If you were buying a pair of pants site unseen online you would want to know if they fit. A guitar is so much more expensive. I think the seller Is out of line on this one.

I think that unless you have deformed hands, the neck will be fine -- I wouldn't worry about it at all. The better question is what does the bass sound like.

Thanks for all your replies. The info on the VSN site does not give info that I wanted to know (hence the questions). The answer I got from the seller seemed a bit snotty to me. The seller can not measure the nut width of the bass because he is in Toronto and the warehouse is else where. before I buy anything (Car/motorcycle/guitar) I try to find out everything about it..from engine/drivetrain on cars,bikes and materials and specs on bass guitars. I am a bit anal about my stuff and before I spend $$ there are things I like to know. BTW seller did not answer my question on the Dillion warranty either.

What if he just inflated his neck frill? Would that be OK?

You'd think he could have at least busted out a ruler and measured nut width. Radius is another story, but he should be able to tell you nut width.

You should always check for specs on the manufacturer's website. In this case the nut width is 1 11/16" and the fret board radius is 11.02". Link Removed

Thanks for the above info but ...Dillion USA is different from Dillion Canada. The Ric copy avaliable in Canada has a different head stock than the USA one and they are 2 separate companies

Probably just an online store, NO merchandise on hand (nothing to measure),
and would likely be a problem in event of a 'return'.
May be better to go thru a better seller of Dillon's equip.
You're certainly not out of line asking for that type of info...
seller is out of line for not being able or willing to provide it.

You are not out of line. The dealer may not have an immediate answer, but should at least be willing to check it out and get back to you.

Definitely not out of line. If you're gonna lay down cash, they better be able to answer all the questions you ask, AND some that you don't.

Also, +1 to the octopus jokes. I was reading the thread and suddenly they appeared. LOL.
