Help Me Choose

Hi there,

<I'm trying hard for this not to be another 'wich iz teh bestest?' thread, but I'd like some help>

Please could you help me choose a bass. My current basses are 1) MIM Fender Jazz with Dimarzios (dark and punchy) 2) Ibanez SR370M (active and punchy, lacking in the highs) 3) Fleabass Streetbass (versatile but more of a Jack of All-Trades)

Some things I am looking for:

4 Strings
Active or Passive
Looks don't matter but I like the feel of Fender Jazzes (NOT the smaller bodies that (I believe?) come with the American Delux models, I just don't like that size, but full size jazz is fine, Musicman Rays and Ibanez SR's.
It would be used for slapping, so I would like that 'New Strings' zing and brightness to it (I'd probably string it with Steel strings to emphasise this)

There's no way I can go above £1,000 but I'd prefer to keep prices around £500-£700 (around $1,600, $800 and $1,000 respectively)

I've Considered a Fender Road Worn Jazz Bass (I played this and loved a) the feel and b) the bright sound), a Fender Classic 70's Jazz Bass (also played and liked), a Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass (Havn't played but I thought it would be a nice bright tone), a Musicman Stingray H (Played and enjoyed, but might end up being too expensive :hmm: )

I'm also looking to buy new.

I know people will invariably give their own favourite basses, but in this case, if you feel it REALLY fills out the criteria that I've set, fire away! I'm looking for a bass I'm happy with, at the end of the day.

Suggestions please! :bassist:

80'sRocker: How is their tone? Thing is, I live on an island with 1 music shop. In said music shop there are 4 basses. It's impossible for me to play anything other than those! :( So I kind of have to go with what I hear and read... 3 of my 4 basses were bought unplayed... I hope you get the idea of my situation.

XtheDeadPawn: I know the whole 'tell me what to buy' thing can be annoying, but if you read the above paragraph, you'll see it's difficult for me to try basses. I only managed to try the Road Worn and the 70's Classic whilst in New York on holiday.

I was also thinking of looking into the new Fender Jaguars. I played a couple Squier Jaguars and I like the body shape. I believe the bridge pickup is in the 70's position which would give a more trebly growl/bite and the active electronics would be more versatile. Thoughts?
