This thread should be called "The search for the one". That is more of what I am trying to do.

So I finally managed to get a band together. After a few years of projects, failed attempts, and auditions with no call backs, I got sick of it all and went out to find some amazing musicians. Lucky for me, they were all my friends.

After getting some cover songs to practice on, I realized I keep grabbing one of my basses, my 1989 Squier II Precision. I have a lot more in my arsenal but I dont use them. They sound good, but my pbass has never let me down. My other basses are frankensteins parted together, but all managed to work great, just being unused. Although some with never leave me due to sentimental reasons, I do have some things I can move out.

So I have decided to "thin the herd" and begin saving for a Fender American Standard Precision bass in Olympic White with a Maple/Maple neck. After all my experiences and reading about others I really do think it will be the "only bass I will ever need".

The catch: I just lost my job and will be collecting unemployment soon. The only major things I have to pay for at the moment are a few bills and gas in the car which are manageable. Selling gear and serious saving are my only way to make this happen.

I figured there are a lot of bassists with the same problem as me, so I'm going to keep track of my progress and keep it posted here on how I can make my dream bass come true. Odd jobs, savings, birthday money, donations, whatever I can manage to save up while still maintaining the bills and such. Today I start with $0. As long as my car doesnt break down, and nothing creeps up on me, I think I can do this.

I tried and saved every penny back in 2008 to buy that exact same bass but with the rosewood fretboard. You are definitely right about it being the only bass you need. I am still amazed by the tone, playability, and craftsmanship every time I pick it up and plug it in. Its been 2 years and I'm still on the honeymoon! ;) Will never get rid of it!

Wow, i literally was going to make this thread.

So, can i join in ?

I have decided about 5 days ago that my fender parts Precision just isn't what i wanted it to be. It was a dream i had, and when it came together it was full of short cuts and part substitutions based on monetary issues. Sorry to say i never play it, and only had 1 show with it..

I play a Sunburst Highway One Jazz bass with Dimarizio Area J pickups that i bought here, i love this bass and now i want a Precision of equal or higher caliber.

I have decided i want a Road Worn Precision (or if i can get a deal the AVRI 57). To get these i will be selling everything, aside from my show rig, Hwy1 J, and practice amp.

All my guitar stuff, other bass, and anything i dont use (so far i have sold my back up head, and my Nintendo DS lol)

Gord Oh, I am starting here at 230$ CDN.

I still need to pay rent, car Insurance, groceries, bills, etc.. but any money i make from extra hours at work or from selling things will go to this pot. I am aiming for My birthday in April, OR if i get weak and finance it on my credit card lol

My wife had me agree to only making 1 purchase every year or so. I start getting worked up every time the Mrs. blesses a purchase. So, i always make those buys count. I didn't get my annual fix this year, my son got it instead. So, next time around, I buying a real gem...

@recreate.me, if some of my stuff sells on ebay, ill have just a bit more than that. then once i list some other stuff here, hopefully it gets picked up.

i know some people have been admiring my custom SX, lol. I also will be putting up a nice parts jazz. as far as what i have planned to sell gets me a little over half way to my goal.

now im torn between going new school or old school.
i could get a modern MIA new for around the same price as a 70s pbass.
i guess only time will tell.

Isnt the new school sound of those MIA basses modeled after those old school pickups? I think in all of the higher end fender basses youll get a sound that is really similar, regardless.

The real difference would be that the 70s is a RI, so its cosmetically the same, where the new MIAs are just whatever fender wanted to sell.

I cant see the sound being too different, the new stuff maybe a bit more edgy....
