Should I? GK and Ampeg...

I recently picked up a GK 1001rb-II and have been using it through my ampeg 410 cab. I really like the sound but I can't help but wonder how much better this thing would sound through a GK cab using the bi-amp feature. Opinions? Should I drop the cash on completing a GK setup? :hmm:

Don't do it without trying it out first.

You may not like the tone, then where will you be? It will be very different.

hyp, I have the exact same setup. I think it sounds good, but I've never compared it to a true GK setup. The only thing is the GK "growl" doesn't sound very pleasant to me. maybe its the ampeg, maybe I wouldn't like it even with the GK cab.

It has a horn and I've heard of doing this...I have no idea how to though. Can you elaborate on how to do this?

As for sound right now, it's hard to explain. More of a hi-fi and clean sound than the setup I was using (power amp and goodies). I'm just wondering if it will get more of the good ol' GK growl with a cab that was designed to go with that head.

well I haven't heard the growl on a 1001rb-ii, but the head in my Backline 210 combo gives a sound I can definately work with.

I'm essentially buying the 1001rb-ii for more headroom (so I can run the 410 at 480w at 8ohms instead of the... 175w right now), but ofcourse adding another cab will eventually happen to use up all of those 700 watts!

I'm not sure if i understand what your asking, but I do know that i've gotten it as loud as i've ever needed or wanted to. I'm a novice at bass and its equiptment, so i'm not sure how much is too much, so i've never "max'd it out" for the hell of it.

To me the GK's are "cleaner" sounding but at the same time you can get a nice dirty growl from them. I still like the good ol' Ampeg tone but the GK seems to better suit the tone I'm looking for. There was a GK preamp in the classified section. I've heard that those preamps don't completely capture the signature GK tone but I've never had the opportunity to try one out.

Basically you run wires from the tweeter to 2 of the pins and wires from the woofer to the two other pins of a 4 pin speakon jack. Connect the cab to the amp with a 4 conductor speakon cable.

The GK has an electronic crossover which does not send the output of the boost circuit to the tweeter, so you do not get amp created overdrive through the horn. A passive crossover in a cab is not going to do that.

My HMS through my 1001RB 2x10 combo and a RBH1x15 work fine. You are not going to cut through with highs, it mids that will get you through providing the guitars and keyboards are not soaking up the frequency. The HMS system is not meant to make you cut through because it's a separate line for the tweets, this way you don't have to worry about woofers putting out lows and highs at the same time! By doing this you get a cleaner signal and less distortion.

That would be a function of the horn, not the crossover. Any decent horn can handle the overdriven signal just fine.
