Wal: Back in Business

I read a post on the Yahoo group Walbassesnaturally...

Well, in short, it's good news. I texted Pete Stevens yesterday 10th
July, to order a few spare parts (usual stuff – truss rod covers,
back-plate screws etc.) and 3 hours later had a call from Paul Herman.
Coincidentally Paul was with Pete yesterday and had cleared out the
last of the old (dusty) spares and taken them to Leatherhead. Paul had
taken all of last week off from his own guitar production to
concentrate on WAL.

Most parts are being priced by suppliers and CNC (?) production of 5
string bridges is in hand. Paul will be checking through the old Order
Book soon and contacting potential customers to check if their orders
are still alive. Talks with Pete's silent partner have progressed and
legal issues will not be a problem.

When all is done; Paul will create a new Price List and commence
production. This will obviously start slow and clear the backlog –
probably not too long.

So at this stage PLEASE don't hassle Paul for a delivery date and
PLEASE don't hassle him for prices. All will happen soon(ish)

BTW (tongue in cheek) – my name's top of the list and no doubt so is
Mike G's and Barry B's order :o)

Chris

So yeah, those of us with the money will be able to buy a Wal in the near future. Cool!

I'm personally very close-minded and have only heard Wal on RHCP and Tool records. Also, if I was covering Tool live, I'd be happy to use any other bass, preferably a Rick or a Ray.

What would also be interesting would be if Wal released their own preamps, a la Sadowsky. You could use it in, say, a Jazz bass, or a Warwick.

I'm confused with what you are saying,... you are close minded because you don't like the WAL sound? in that case why are you on that yahoo group? :eyebrow:

I agree could be interesting if they did do such a thing,... make for interesting combinations of sound!

Oh cool, I always wanted to try a Wal, but I am not sure if I could ever afford one.

While this is great news, the prices will probably be quite thanks to rising costs all around.

Oh and one thing, how much did Wal basses go for originally? Like the base models.

If you want a better idea of what a Wal sounds like, check out Mick Karn. Now THAT's a Wal - no mistaking it. No offense to Justin Chancellor, but very little of what you are hearing is a typical Wal tone.

I think he's meant that he's closeminded in that he hasn't heard a lot of recordings featuring a wal

I like the suggestions. Keep 'em up.

I'll probably never be able to afford a Wal. But I don't think I'll be like "Oh no, I'll never sound EXACTLY like Justin Chancellor or Mick Karn".

Oh yeah, I may have heard one on Pearl Jam. Did Jeff Ament use a fretless one on "Even Flow"?
